Meet Ismael and Eduardo Andrade

Since 1901, Ismael Andrade and his family have been growing coffee. With over 100 years of accumulated expertise and coffee knowledge, Ismael and his brother Eduardo have applied this experience to Fazenda Sao Silvestre for the past 25 years. The 600-hectare farm, rich in volcanic soil, is one of several farms owned by the Andrade family. In accordance with Brazilian law, they have allocated over 100 hectares of land to permanent natural forest reserves.

The Andrades helped establish the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA). They pursue excellence on their own farms, combining meticulous crop planning and management with farm processing, followed by analysis in their on-site BSCA cupping laboratory. The resulting award-winning coffees represent the best of Brazilian coffee.

Minas Gerais, Brazil

To put it in perspective, take the size of Texas and multiply it by 3, and you'll have the size of Brazil's Cerrado (savanna), one of the most biodiverse savannas in the world. But for coffee lovers, Cerrado refers to a region in western Minas Gerais, Brazil. The clay mineral soil here requires consistent fertilization, but coffee plants love the hot, humid summers and pleasant dry winters.

Cerrado de Minas, also known as West Minas or "Triângulo Mineiro," was the first coffee-producing region in Brazil to receive a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Coffees from here - typically naturally processed - are balanced, with creamy body and caramel chocolate notes. Although coffee cultivation arrived in Cerrado only 40 years ago, 90% of the farms here are medium-sized (2-300 hectares) to large plantations. Brazilian forest laws now require farmers to set aside 35% of their land for conservation.
