Discovering Africa's Unique Charm Beyond Stereotypes
When it comes to Africa, many people only associate it with hunger and poverty, or perhaps the great animal migration. Setting aside these stereotypes, have you ever taken the time to understand Africa's beautiful and unique aspects?
South Africa's Coffee Industry
Located at the southernmost tip of Africa, South Africa, while not an ideal coffee-growing region, still holds a place in the coffee kingdom. Its varieties originate from Kenya. South African coffee bean production areas are mainly concentrated in the northeastern region of Natal, extending to Transvaal, with the southernmost limit at 30 degrees south latitude. Further south, coffee cannot be cultivated due to early frost damage. Interestingly, South African coffee beans possess characteristics similar to Central American coffee beans, with fragrant aroma and lower acidity. (Flavor characteristics: Sweetness-medium, Acidity-weak, Bitterness-medium, Body-medium, Aroma-strong)
Many people are unaware that Africa is the birthplace of coffee.
Coffee beans are one of South Africa's main export products.
It's similar to how many people associate Switzerland with chocolate, rather than Ghana and Madagascar, where cocoa beans are actually grown.
Although European countries like Italy or France do not grow coffee beans, coffee has always been a representative of European culture.
Once roasted, coffee's optimal flavor period can only be maintained for four to five weeks.
Therefore, buying coffee outside of Africa means 'paying high prices for coffee that has missed its optimal flavor period.'
South African Coffee Bean Flavor Description
The taste is aromatic with lower acidity, reminiscent of Central American coffee beans.
South Africa's coffee production is mainly concentrated in the northeastern part of the country, from Natal between Lesotho and Mozambique, extending northward to Transvaal, with the southernmost limit at 30° south latitude. Further south, coffee cannot be cultivated due to early frost damage.
The country's coffee trees originate from Kenya and are of excellent quality. In 1975, only 1,000 hectares of land were used for coffee cultivation, but a new nine-year plan was established in 1987 to expand the cultivated area, adding another 6,000 hectares.
Interestingly, the fruits from the country's coffee trees more closely resemble Central American coffee beans (even though Kenya is the origin of this variety), with fragrant aroma and lower acidity.
