What Makes Ecuadorian Coffee Beans Special?
How Much Does a Cup of Ecuadorian Coffee Cost at a Typical Coffee Shop?
Located about 1,000km west of mainland Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, directly beneath the equator, lies Ecuador's Galapagos Islands. The coffee produced here is rare and rarely circulated among general consumers. This archipelago is designated as a natural protected area by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with explicit laws prohibiting the use of any chemical pesticides or fertilizers on the entire islands. Consequently, it has been recognized by the United States' OCIA as an organic coffee production region.
The areas growing Ecuadorian coffee beans are concentrated on an island called San Cristobal, at elevations of approximately 800-1,200 meters. Due to the island climate factors, the growing regions are consistently covered by thick clouds and mist, and boast dense, diverse vegetation. Galapagos coffee, regarded as a treasure by coffee enthusiasts worldwide, is cultivated in this pristine, natural, and perfect ecological environment.
According to relevant literature, the coffee history of the Galapagos Islands began in 1875 when French agronomist Don Manual Gobo brought Bourbon seeds to the region. For a long period, these coffee trees remained abandoned in the forest, growing wild until 1990 when the Gonzalez-Duche family took over and reorganized the cultivation. The plantation is currently named "Hacienda El Cafetal San Cristabal," and the coffee it produces - from cultivation to post-harvest processing - is subject to strict environmental regulations. The annual production is approximately 1,150 bags (45kg each), and the cultivated variety remains the "Old Bourbon" originally transplanted there.
Flavor Profile
Special dry aroma of citrus and dark berries. When sipped, it presents rich and solid dark berries, blackberries, blackcurrants, and grapes, along with fresh citrus flavors, cranberry sweetness, plum notes, cherry aromas, with overall bright acidity, juiciness, substance, and rich layering.
The Galapagos Islands
Located about 1,000km from mainland Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, directly beneath the equator, these islands are also home to the famous GALAPAGOS penguins. These are Ecuador's GALAPAGOS Islands. The coffee produced here is rarely known by people.
This island is designated as a natural park by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and laws prohibit the use of any chemical fertilizers here. Therefore, it has also been recognized by the United States' OCIA as an organic coffee production region.
The place where Ecuadorian coffee beans are grown is an island called SAN CRISTOBAL, a mountainous area at an elevation of about 800m. This area is covered by thick fog and dense vegetation. Water emerging from volcanic craters in the center forms El Junko Lake, and coffee is cultivated in this perfect natural ecosystem. Cultivation began in 1875 when Don Manual J Gobos brought Bourbon seeds to this location. Initially, the cultivated area was only 200 hectares, and currently, the cultivated area is only about 400 hectares. The total production of SAN CRISTOBAL is only 1,150 bags (45kg each) annually - very little!! Truly very little!! Since this island is designated as a natural park by UNESCO and laws prohibit the use of any chemical fertilizers, it has been recognized by the United States' OCIA as an organic coffee production region.
