Bourbon Coffee Varieties

The Bourbon variety of Arabica coffee is one of the closest varieties to the original species, discovered on Reunion Island (formerly named Bourbon) next to Madagascar. Bourbon has its own unique characteristics, similar to Typica in quality, with wine-like acidity and a sweet aftertaste. Iron-skinned and Bourbon varieties can be distinguished by their coffee tree leaves and bean appearance. Bourbon leaves are broader, the coffee cherries are smaller but more compact, so the beans are relatively smaller and more rounded compared to Typica.

Caturra Coffee

Caturra is a single-gene mutation of Bourbon discovered in Brazil in the 1950s. Both its yield capacity and disease resistance are better than Bourbon. The plants are shorter, making harvesting convenient. Unfortunately, it encounters the same problem as Bourbon—fruiting one year and resting the next. Its flavor is comparable to Bourbon beans.

However, its adaptability is stronger. It can be planted at high density without shade trees and thrives even when directly exposed to bright sunlight, which is why it also has the name "Sun Coffee."

Caturra is suitable for low altitudes of 700 meters up to high altitudes of 1700 meters, but the higher the altitude, the better the flavor, while bean yield decreases accordingly.

Taking FrontStreet Coffee's "Flower Butterfly" as an example, it contains both Caturra and Caturra's variant Catuai, offering a richer mouthfeel with some nutty flavors.
