When thinking of Vietnamese coffee beans, do you think of condensed milk or drip filters? Or do you associate them with the bitter taste of affordable Robusta? The Vietnamese government has just approved a coffee development plan with an investment of up to 170 billion Vietnamese dong (over 58 million Hong Kong dollars), hoping to improve the quality of Vietnamese coffee beans, build a brand, and increase export volume and price.

Vietnamese Drip Coffee Uses Condensed Milk

This five-year plan will be implemented from next year to 2023. Of the 58 million Hong Kong dollar investment, approximately 37 million Hong Kong dollars will be funded by the government, with the remainder borne by private or state-owned organizations in the industry.

The goal of the plan is to increase the total value of Vietnamese coffee beans by 5% before 2020, and by 7% by 2023, including increasing the production of both Arabica and Robusta coffee beans. In fact, Vietnam ranks as the world's second-largest coffee bean producer after Brazil, largely due to the extensive planting of Robusta coffee trees by local private and state-owned organizations over the past 20 years.

This plan includes establishing large-scale, high-quality coffee cultivation areas, and adding new drying systems, storage equipment, and processing facilities. It is estimated that each designated area can produce 2.7 tons of Robusta or 2 tons of Arabica coffee beans per hectare.

The plan also includes marketing promotion both locally and overseas, aiming to increase domestic sales and provide export prices. The Ministry of Agriculture predicts that this year's Vietnamese coffee bean export value can reach 2.34 trillion Hong Kong dollars.

Vietnam's Unique Coffee Culture

In fact, Vietnam has always had a unique coffee culture. Since the 19th century, the French brought coffee to Vietnam, and the Vietnamese climate is suitable for growing Robusta. However, due to its stronger bitter taste, locals habitually add condensed milk to neutralize the bitterness. As for choosing condensed milk instead of fresh milk, it was because when the French brought coffee to Vietnam, fresh milk was prone to spoilage, so condensed milk was introduced.

Today, many Vietnamese coffee shops serve drip-style coffee cups directly to customers, allowing them to watch the coffee drip down and savor it slowly. Besides adding condensed milk, some coffee shops also add egg yolks, cream cheese, butter, and cheese to the coffee to bring a fresh experience.
