Pu'er City in Yunnan Province is China's largest producer of domestically grown coffee beans and has been awarded the title "China's Coffee Capital." With a cultivation area exceeding 1.4 million mu (approximately 233,000 acres), it far surpasses Taiwan's small-scale intensive farming model. The new harvest season of Yunnan coffee beans yields 100,000 tons. In addition to supplying international coffee chain brands like "Starbucks" and "Nestlé," it also provides for mainland China's own brand "Sena Zuo'an Coffee."

Zhang Yu, Operations Director of the Yunnan Coffee Exchange, points out that Pu'er coffee lacks brand visibility internationally, resulting in suppressed prices. Therefore, efforts are currently underway to strongly promote the Pu'er coffee brand by hosting coffee cupping competitions and establishing auction centers. The 2015 champion coffee beans reached a transaction price of 2,600 RMB per kilogram, aiming to break free from the困境 of cheap coffee and create new value as "black gold."

At the 30th Global Specialty Coffee Expo, China became the featured country, and Pu'er coffee also crossed oceans as the representative of Chinese coffee. Yunnan exhibitors were surprised to discover that some American coffee roasters had already included Pu'er coffee in their inventories, and Starbucks even launched a single-origin Yunnan coffee product.

Today, the annual Pu'er Green Bean Competition held in Yunnan welcomes coffee merchants from around the world. The vast majority of coffee varieties carefully cultivated by Pu'er farmers pass cupping tests, with scores consistently maintaining above 80 points according to standards set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

Pu'er coffee's connection with the world didn't begin today. Many years ago, it had already achieved over 80% export to more than 30 countries and regions including the United States, Germany, France, and Saudi Arabia.

However, for a long period, global coffee merchants seemed unaware that China also produced coffee. "Chinese coffee beans were previously exported mainly as primary agricultural products, with purchasers rarely promoting information about their origin," revealed Shu Yang, General Manager of Yunnan International Coffee Exchange.

For a long time, Pu'er coffee has lacked pricing power in the international market, with coffee prices significantly lower than those in the international trading market. Shu Yang stated that only by pursuing a specialty development path will global coffee merchants pay attention to origin brand information; improved coffee quality will enhance bargaining power.

China has also established coffee breeding bases for superior varieties, coffee research centers, and other institutions in Pu'er, hoping to improve coffee quality through superior variety cultivation and technical guidance, helping Pu'er coffee reach the global market.

Currently, among Pu'er's 300,000+ coffee farmers, many are beginning to introduce coffee estate management models. In a coffee estate in Nandaohe Village on the outskirts of Pu'er City, 77-year-old coffee farmer Liao Xiugui's 300-mu coffee forest has been harvested and is awaiting purchase by foreign merchants.
