The Musasa Farmers' Association, located in the town of the same name in the Gakenke region of Rwanda's northern highlands, has established its first coffee washing station in 2003. In recent years, it has become one of the largest coffee washing facilities in Rwanda. This washing station, situated at an altitude of 2,000 meters, allows coffee beans to maintain cool temperatures during the washed fermentation process. Although this extends the fermentation time significantly, it may be precisely this factor that enables the Musasa Farmers' Association to produce coffee beans with unique flavors, continuously yielding high-quality Rwandan coffee.

Established in 2002, the Musasa Farmers' Association is also known by many as the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, a name that achieved remarkable success in cupping competitions in 2010.

Elegant violet floral notes, honey, roasted almonds, berry sweetness, rich citrus aroma, with a silky smooth texture—overall exceptionally refined.

How to Roast Rwandan Coffee Beans

Let's explore what makes Rwandan coffee beans delicious and how these flavors develop.

Like all coffee, roasting is influenced by factors such as bean variety, origin, processing method, and more. However, there's one important thing to remember: due to Rwanda's high-altitude growing conditions, these coffee beans have high density.

A general principle for African specialty coffee is to apply significant heat during the roasting process. Hard beans like these transfer heat well, so a higher dropping temperature and a faster heating rate would be beneficial.

Meanwhile, Rwandan coffee beans have excellent body, so you can also try extending the flavor development time and first crack period to emphasize the body. Light-roasted Rwandan coffee offers pleasant acidity, but don't be afraid to create more syrup-like body/texture in the coffee.
