Rwanda's Coffee Heritage

Since the 1920s, Arabica coffee grown in Rwanda has been world-renowned for its unique fruity sweetness and rich grassy aroma. In recent years, the Rwandan government has taken proactive measures to vigorously promote coffee production, establishing coffee production cooperatives across the country, providing technical guidance and financial support to farmers, enabling significant development in coffee production.

Coffee Processing Methods

Rwandan coffee beans, like many African countries, are primarily produced by small-scale farmers. During each harvest season, ripe coffee cherries are collected and sent to processing stations. Farmers pick ripe coffee berries and gather them at processing stations for processing. First, manual selection ensures that no unripe or damaged fruits are mixed in. Next, the fruit skin is removed, followed by a 12-18 hour washed fermentation process in a cool, low-temperature environment. The adhering pectin is then thoroughly cleaned in channels. During the drying process on racks, processing station members manually turn and carefully tend to the beans, ensuring that under adequate sunlight, the parchment beans do not lose moisture or experience uneven drying until the moisture content stabilizes below 14%.

Rwanda Coffee Growing Regions

Rwanda has approximately 33,000 hectares of coffee plantations, with 500,000 people engaged in coffee cultivation. With favorable natural conditions of high altitude and fertile volcanic soil, the country's rich soil and suitable climate promote plant growth. Coffee trees seem driven or forced to grow vigorously upward, yet perhaps because they grow too quickly, they cannot produce the finest coffee beans. The beautiful "Land of a Thousand Hills," Rwanda, has a long and rich culture of growing highland coffee, primarily focusing on high-quality Arabica coffee. Rwanda is one of the few countries in the world that can fully enjoy the harmonious consistency between soil, altitude, and climate. In this unique growing environment, Rwanda's high-quality coffee possesses distinctive taste and aroma. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda is one of the original varieties of Arabica coffee.

Rwanda Coffee Characteristics

Rwanda coffee's flavor is described as having "grassy aroma" with tropical climate characteristics. Besides presenting fruity sweetness, this coffee also allows people to taste refreshing, bright, and fresh sensations. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda delights with its fruity sweetness, featuring rich and full-bodied aroma with absolutely no astringency, leaving a long-lasting aftertaste. This coffee has delicious, citrus-like sweet fragrance and displays a deep chocolate color.

Rwanda Coffee Flavor Profile

Rwanda coffee beans feature slight fruit acidity, cherry, cinnamon, fresh and bright acidity, and solid sweetness.
