Have you ever thought about the origins of coffee if you're a coffee lover? It turns out that Arabica and Robusta coffee each originate from two mythical stories. If you're a coffee enthusiast who doesn't know their origins, you must read the following stories while savoring your coffee!
The Origin of Arabica Coffee: The Curious Goats
Legend tells of a young shepherd named Kaldi in ancient Ethiopian highlands. One day while tending his flock, he sat under a tree and inadvertently fell asleep. With no one watching, the sheep wandered freely across the wilderness and consumed red berries from an unknown shrub.
When Kaldi awoke and searched for his flock, he found them constantly circling and jumping around that mysterious shrub. Driven by curiosity, Kaldi tried one of the berries and immediately felt extremely excited, couldn't help but dance along with his sheep.
A passing monk witnessed this scene and was greatly intrigued. He tried roasting these mysterious berries, and as soon as they were thrown into the fire, a delightful aroma filled the air. He ground the roasted berries and added water, creating what we know today as Arabica coffee!
The Origin of Robusta Coffee: Unity
In ancient Uganda, precious Robusta coffee beans served as an important medium in sacred ceremonies that united families. The ceremony involved splitting one coffee bean between two people to eat, from which the spirit of the coffee bean would forever connect the two families in friendship and loyalty.
According to oral history, one ritual in the traditional KWANJULA tribe wedding involved the bride's family preparing whole dried coffee fruits to welcome the visiting groom. After roasting, these coffee fruits were not used for brewing coffee but were instead eaten whole by both families, similar to peanuts, symbolizing the sincere union of two families.
After reading these two coffee origin stories, aren't you eager to try coffee made from Ethiopian beans (the birthplace of Arabica) and Ugandan beans (home of Robusta)?
