Indonesian Coffee Overview
Indonesian coffee is highly diverse in quality, with most coffees marketed by their island of origin: such as Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, or Timur. The advantage of Indonesian coffee is that most varieties feature rich, restrained flavors and lively moderate acidity. Chinese coffee enthusiasts hold Indonesian Mandheling coffee in extremely high regard, making it one of the most widely accepted single-origin coffee products. Indonesian Mandheling was once acclaimed as the world's finest unique wet-hulled coffee beans.
Mandheling is a trademarked product. Today, any coffee cherries harvested from Indonesia and processed using this unique wet-hulling method are sold as Mandheling coffee beans. Mandheling originated from coffee grown by the Mandailing people in the Tapanuli region of northwestern Sumatra. At the end of World War II, a Japanese soldier introduced it to the Japanese market. Due to a pronunciation error, "Mandailing" mistakenly became "Mandheling" coffee, and the name stuck.
Sumatra Coffee Regions
Sumatra coffee is remarkably complex and elusive. The finest Sumatra coffees come from two main areas: the Aceh province in northern Sumatra near Lake Tawar, and the mountainous region surrounding Lake Toba further south. Due to the many small-scale farmers and their unique semi-washed processing methods, combined with iron-deficient soil, coffee beans from this region exhibit a distinctive bluish color in their fresh green state.
Sumatra Island is Indonesia's second-largest island and the world's sixth-largest, covering an area of 470,000 square kilometers—thirteen times the size of Taiwan. It's divided into eight provinces, but only two extensively cultivate coffee: Aceh Province and North Sumatra Province. The most representative coffee-growing regions in these provinces are the Gayo Mountains surrounding Lake Tawar in Aceh, where coffee is cultivated by the indigenous Gayo people, featuring a unique culture dominated by female farming and harvesting. North Sumatra coffee is grown around the massive Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic crater lake, with the famous Lintong growing region located south of Lake Toba.
Golden Mandheling
Japanese merchants not only purchase coffee produced on Sumatra Island but also implement meticulous Japanese-style production management. Cultivated with the Japanese spirit of quality requirements, the resulting high-quality Sumatra Mandheling coffee was given a new name: Golden Mandheling coffee beans. Therefore, Golden Mandheling is a coffee product trademarked by the Japanese.
This batch of Sumatra 3A Organic Golden Mandheling is certified organic. Flavor characteristics: gentle fruit acidity, subtly restrained aroma, rich and viscous mouthfeel, with captivating creamy aroma and bitter fragrance notes.
Golden Mandheling Profile
Mandheling coffee is produced in Sumatra, Asian Indonesia, also known as "Sumatra coffee."
Its flavor is extremely rich, with sweet aroma, pure bitterness, and full body, carrying hints of sweetness and slight acidity.
It leaves a long-lasting aftertaste and resonance.
Mandheling coffee is considered the world's most full-bodied coffee. When tasting Mandheling, you can feel a distinct smoothness on your palate. It also has lower acidity, but this acidity is still clearly perceptible. The lively subtle acidity blends with the richest aroma, allowing you to easily perceive the vibrant factors within its gentle richness. Additionally, this coffee has a faint earthy aroma, which some describe as herbal plant fragrance.
