Bird of Paradise Coffee Bean Origins: Which is Better, Bird of Paradise or Yirgacheffe?

It is said that Papua New Guinea's coffee trees originally came from Blue Mountain variety stock plantings, which is why some people claim that New Guinea beans are descendants of Blue Mountain. However, the taste and flavor profiles of the two are quite different.

Currently within New Guinea, there are numerous large and small coffee estates, but the most internationally recognized is the Sigri Estate, which is well-funded and excels at marketing and packaging.

Today's featured Sigri Estate AA-grade Bird of Paradise, while renowned in the domestic market for quite some time, is particularly special as it's a rare PB (Peaberry) Rainforest Alliance certified small round bean, complete with the "Rainforest Alliance Certified" green frog logo.

This batch is the latest season's PB peaberry beans, featuring a green color with a hint of the legendary "pale blue." The beans are whole, with optimal moisture content, excellent texture when held in hand, beautiful appearance, and minimal defects.

When medium-roasted, these beans exhibit low acidity, clean and smooth flavor, balanced and stable character, making them easy to roast and extract. They're not only suitable for single-origin brewing but also excellent for blending, making them a very user-friendly and versatile bean.

However, coffee enthusiasts who prefer distinctive or intense flavors might find them somewhat lacking in character. For such palates, we recommend a medium-dark to dark roast profile.

Papua New Guinea is located in the eastern part of Irian Jaya Island, which belongs to Indonesian territory. Since 1937, when Bourbon varieties from the Blue Mountain region were first planted, Papua New Guinea quickly established its position as a specialty coffee brand. Small-scale coffee farms distributed in the highland regions primarily cultivate this coffee, where the natural environment resembles that of Jamaica's Blue Mountains.

Sigri Farm, located in the Papua New Guinea highlands, was established in 1950. It quickly gained fame for its excellent quality coffee and is now recognized as premium-grade coffee. Sigri Farm not only sits on a plateau at 1,600 meters elevation but also boasts ideal coffee-growing conditions with abundant rainfall and rich soil. Additionally, from coffee tree cultivation to washing, quality management follows standards certified over decades. Almost all varieties are cultivated using Arusha and Typica, thus producing coffee with maximum uniformity in quality. Bird of Paradise Estate's green beans maintain extremely stable quality each season and are deeply loved by European and American roasting experts.

Sigri is a region that places great importance on ecological environment and is recognized worldwide as a representative product of organic coffee. Coffee trees use original forests as natural shade without destroying the pristine forests, while also protecting wildlife habitats and maintaining ecological integrity. Because of this excellent quality, Sigri coffee is exported to European regions like France and Germany, where specialty coffee is cherished. In recent years, due to its outstanding quality, coffee exported to Europe has even been re-imported by Japan.

Sigri coffee and Colombian coffee are both known as Mild coffee, but unlike Colombian coffee, Sigri offers red wine and whiskey flavors. It possesses very rich aroma and refreshing, subtle acidity with excellent sweetness but no herbal or earthy notes. One can experience extremely rich fruity and floral aromas, making it difficult to describe the taste of Bird of Paradise with any single flavor descriptor.
