Papua New Guinea is located east of Indonesia and has a standard island climate. Situated between the equator and 10 degrees south latitude, it features tropical rainforests, volcanic rocks, and highland terrain. With elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters, it is truly a paradise for coffee cultivation. Local production is not large, with approximately 85% of the total coffee being produced by smallholder garden cultivation systems. Small farmers join local cooperatives to share processing equipment. Coffee is the second largest agricultural export commodity in Papua New Guinea, which demonstrates the importance of the coffee industry to the country's economy.
Due to different coffee varieties from Indonesia, higher elevations than Sumatra, and the use of washed processing, PNG coffee's regional flavor is distinctly different from Indonesia's mellow and low-toned profile. Instead, it exhibits brightness, acidity, floral and fruit aromas, similar to the flavors of South America.
The Paradise Bird Estate
The Paradise Bird Estate is located in the Waghi Valley of the Western Highlands Province, situated in high-altitude mountainous regions at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, with well-drained volcanic soil. The estate was established in 1950 and has been operating for over 60 years, making it a pioneer in coffee cultivation in the region.
Due to its geographical location in the southern hemisphere, the local coffee harvest season occurs from May to August, which differs from the typical October to February cross-year harvest period in Central and South America.
The farm and surrounding farmers collectively manage nearly 413 hectares of extensive land, harvesting only fully ripe red coffee cherries and transporting them to the estate's own processing facilities for post-harvest processing.
However, the washed processing method in New Guinea differs from the processing methods in Central and South America. It employs a triple-washed fermentation process, with each soaking lasting approximately 24 hours.
Clean water is replaced to control the coffee flavor. After thorough washing, the parchment beans have their outer layers removed and undergo various grading processes, such as AA grade, AB grade, PB round beans, etc. This meticulous post-processing method brings bright and delicate fruity acidity to the coffee itself, with a clean and lingering sweet aftertaste.
The Paradise Bird Estate also places great importance on ecological and environmental issues within the plantation. Two different types of shade trees are planted to provide a good growing environment for coffee and serve as excellent habitats for birds.
Currently, there are 90 different species of birds and various wild animals within the plantation, making it an excellent example of sustainable coffee estate management.
