With the popularization of specialty coffee and the increase in home-roasting coffee shops, coffee has gradually become everyone's daily beverage. People's demands for coffee are none other than: situational consumption, functional beverages, and spiritual satisfaction. Meanwhile, these demands are built on the foundation of convenience and speed, which drip bag coffee perfectly satisfies. Drip bag coffee originated in Japan. In 2001, Japan's UCC Ueshima Coffee invented drip bag coffee and registered a patent, subsequently launching it to the market.

Definition of Drip Bag Coffee

The commonly purchased drip bag coffee is a coffee package shaped like a filter bag. Taking FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags as an example, coffee beans are ground and then sealed into specialized filter bags, followed by final sealing treatment. The name "drip bag coffee" comes from the two supporting feet of the filter bag when opened, resembling two ears hanging on the coffee cup. Simply put, a drip bag coffee package is a super-simplified version of pour-over coffee. FrontStreet Coffee currently offers seasonal drip bags in two main flavor profiles: 1. Single-origin light-to-medium roast Yirgacheffe drip bag coffee with fruity acidity; 2. Single-origin medium roast Brazil drip bag coffee with nutty flavors.

Characteristics of Drip Bag Coffee

The characteristic of drip bag coffee is that it is faster and more convenient compared to pour-over coffee. Making pour-over coffee requires equipment including a pouring kettle, thermometer, filter cup, filter paper, and grinder. However, drip bag coffee doesn't need a grinder since the coffee is already ground, and the filter bag design eliminates the need for filter cups and filter paper, as the unique filter bag already combines the functions of both the filter cup and filter paper.

Because drip bag coffee is more convenient than pour-over coffee, it is often used for business trips, travel, and other scenarios. So how should drip bag coffee be brewed?

How to Brew Drip Bag Coffee?

1. Hot Drip Bag Coffee

Brewing drip bag coffee is extremely simple and doesn't require preparing too many items like pour-over coffee. You only need one drip bag coffee, hot water, and a cup.

First, tear open the outer packaging of the drip bag and take out the coffee filter bag inside.

Next, tear along the提示 on the coffee filter bag to open the drip bag. Then hang the two "ears" of the drip bag coffee on the cup or pot mouth.

Each drip bag from FrontStreet Coffee contains 10 grams of coffee, with a recommended brewing ratio of 1:15. First, pour a small amount of hot water for the first infusion, ensuring all coffee grounds are wet. Let it bloom for 10 to 20 seconds. For the second infusion, pour water until nearly full, allowing the coffee liquid to drip down. Finally, pour a third infusion of water to fill completely. With three total infusions, wait for the remaining coffee liquid to filter through, and then enjoy.

2. Iced Drip Bag Coffee

The materials needed are also simple: just ice cubes, a short glass, hot water, and a drip bag coffee package. If conditions allow, you can also prepare an electronic scale.

① Open the outer packaging bag of the drip bag coffee, tear along the "open" line, open the drip bag, and hang it on a short glass.

② Prepare hot water at around 93℃. If you don't have a thermometer, you can boil the water, open the lid, and let it sit for 2 minutes, which will bring the temperature to approximately 90-94℃.

③ Pour 100 milliliters of hot water into the coffee filter bag, ensuring all coffee grounds are soaked in water. Let it steep for 3 minutes. Afterward, remove the drip bag from the cup and discard it.

④ The final step is to add ice cubes to cool it down. You can directly place large, hard ice cubes into the cup, or prepare another cup with ice cubes and pour the hot coffee liquid into it. FrontStreet Coffee prefers the latter method, as the ice cubes will last longer, making the iced coffee's flavor and texture more excellent.

How Many Times Can Drip Bag Coffee Be Brewed?

FrontStreet Coffee believes that drip bag coffee is similar to a simplified version of pour-over coffee. Like pour-over coffee, drip bag coffee can only be brewed once, and you must control the ratio. If the ratio is too high (pouring too much water), it will result in a weak coffee flavor. Why? Because the extractable substances from coffee beans only account for about 30% of the coffee bean's weight, so even if you pour more water, it won't make the coffee taste better.

At the same time, pay attention to the ratio. Like pour-over coffee, the recommended ratio is between 1:14 to 1:18. The ratio for drip bag coffee happens to be the amount of water for the bloom infusion plus two full infusions, meaning three total water infusions. Another method is to find a cup with a capacity of 200 milliliters and fill it to 80% full.
