Introduction
Invented in 1933 by Italian Alfanso Bialetti, this stovetop espresso maker uses a base heating method to brew coffee and is a type of distillation brewer. It's the most accessible type of espresso machine and is widely used in Italian households.
Alfonso Bialetti was an inventor and designer. After completing his studies in France and returning to his home country, Alfonso entered Italy's thriving aluminum industry at the time.
In 1918, Alfonso founded his own factory and established the Bialetti company, beginning to sell aluminum-related metal products, including household cleaning utensils and other tools.
What You Need to Make Espresso with a Moka Pot:
1. Moka pot
2. Gas stove with rack OR induction cooker
3. Coffee beans
4. Coffee grinder
Brewing Process:
①. Disassemble the moka pot, which consists of an upper chamber, a middle coffee grounds basket, and a lower chamber.
②. Pour water into the lower chamber.
③. Fill with water up to just below the pressure relief valve.
④. Add coffee grounds to the filter basket and level the surface. No need to tamp the coffee.
⑤. Place the coffee grounds basket onto the lower chamber.
⑥. Attach the upper chamber and tighten completely.
⑦. Heat the moka pot over low heat. You can place it directly on the gas stove. For more stable heating during the process, you can place a wire mesh rack over the gas stove.
⑧. When the water heats up and the pot makes a whistling sound from steam, you can turn off the heat to complete brewing.
⑨. After coffee flows into the upper chamber, you can pour it into another container.
Important Notes for Using a Moka Pot:
1. When filling the lower chamber with water, pay special attention that the water level must not exceed the pressure relief valve.
2. After heating, do not directly touch the pot body to avoid burns.
3. If coffee erupts forcefully, the water temperature is too high. Conversely, if it flows too slowly, the water temperature is too low, and you should increase the heat.
4. Safety: Due to pressure buildup, pay attention to heat control during brewing.
The principle of moka pot coffee extraction is actually quite simple: it utilizes the steam pressure generated in the lower chamber. When the steam pressure becomes strong enough to penetrate the coffee grounds, it pushes hot water up into the upper chamber.
Coffee extracted with a moka pot has a strong flavor, balanced acidity and bitterness, and features a crema layer. It's the coffee brewing method closest to authentic espresso. Easy to use, it has become a symbol of home espresso making. If you have a milk frother at home, you might even be able to create latte art!
