Coffee Making Methods: Four Devices to Brew Great Coffee Without a Machine

Drip Coffee Maker

Using a drip coffee maker is convenient and time-saving, with this low-tech device producing excellent results.

The drip coffee maker consists of simple components, including a plastic filter holder that is discreetly installed on the kettle. These devices may not be as stylish as electric machines, but they are durable and attractive.

Pour water at an appropriate temperature over the ground coffee beans, ensuring even saturation to allow the coffee's flavor to fully infuse into the water.

Recommendations

If using a flat-bottom coffee pot, use medium-coarse ground coffee.

Wait a few seconds for boiled water to stop boiling before pouring into the coffee pot. Never use boiling water.

Follow the rule of 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for 180ml (6 ounces) of water.

French Press

The simplest method for making coffee is using a French press, which can produce the rich flavor of pressed coffee.

Pour hot water in before adding the coffee, letting the slightly cooled water steep the grounds for four to six minutes. Then carefully and slowly press down, pushing the filter to the bottom of the pot. Ensure you press slowly and hold the coffee pot steadily.

Recommendations

For best results, use coarse ground coffee.

First rinse the glass container with hot water.

Never use boiling water; always wait a moment before mixing the coffee grounds with hot water.

Drink the coffee immediately after brewing.

Follow the rule of 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for 180ml (6 ounces) of water.

Moka Pot

Time-tested, the Moka pot is an easy-to-use and inexpensive stovetop coffee maker.

Steam causes water to rise through the coffee grounds, extracting coffee essence. Coffee brewed in a Moka pot isn't as perfect as espresso, but it's convenient and superior to regular brewing methods.

Recommendations

Whenever possible, choose a stainless steel pot over an aluminum one.

Use medium to fine ground coffee.

Avoid boiling whenever possible.

Espresso Machine

Currently, there are hundreds of espresso machines on the market, varying in size, shape, specifications, and functions. Espresso machines use pressure to create truly aromatic espresso, becoming increasingly popular in homes and offices.

Although espresso machines require higher skill, care, and maintenance, they are well worth it considering their excellent results.

Recommendations

Always keep the machine clean.

Always use high-quality water or the recommended filter.

Use fine ground coffee for best results.

FrontStreet Coffee's Brewing Tips

FrontStreet Coffee is dedicated to sharing our professional knowledge, striving to broaden your understanding and enhance your enjoyment of specialty premium coffee.

Our passion comes from sourcing, storing, roasting, grinding, and brewing the finest coffee beans from around the world. We're delighted to share the following tips for brewing specialty premium coffee.

Coffee Essentials

Use only fresh, high-quality coffee, ground just before brewing. Whole coffee beans stay fresh longer than ground coffee, and you'll taste the difference.

Water makes up 98% of every cup of coffee, so use fresh cold water and measure it every time. If you feel tap water quality isn't good enough, use filtered or bottled water instead.

To ensure brewed coffee is rich without bitterness, we recommend using the grind size specified by your coffee brewing system. Our baristas can suggest the appropriate grind.

The water-to-coffee ratio is very important. We recommend measuring your coffee grounds every time. 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee for 6 ounces of water works best.

The ideal water temperature for brewing coffee is 90-96°C (195-205°F). Never use boiling water to brew coffee, as this will create bitterness.

Reusing coffee grounds produces tasteless coffee that's difficult to drink. Always use fresh grounds.

We recommend not reheating coffee. Coffee can be kept warm on an electric burner for only 20 minutes, after which the taste will deteriorate. If you want to keep coffee warm longer, consider using a thermal carafe or thermos.

If you want to store coffee for more than a week, always keep coffee beans in an airtight container and place them in a cool cabinet.
