The Difference Between Espresso and Americano Coffee (Menu Chapter)

Simply put:

1. Different Extraction Methods

1. Espresso is made by forcing high-pressure water through coffee grounds to create concentrated coffee. Due to high-pressure extraction, oils from the coffee are extracted, commonly known as Crema, giving it rich aroma and thick coffee texture, suitable for making specialty coffee drinks.

2. Americano coffee is brewed based on the principle of drip coffee. The extracted coffee is suitable for direct drinking, with a smooth flavor and relatively thin coffee texture.

2. Different Coffee Grind Sizes

1. Espresso requires finer coffee powder to match its high-pressure brewing conditions.

2. Americano coffee is best made with medium-grind coffee.

3. Different Caffeine Content

1. Espresso has the shortest extraction time, resulting in lower caffeine content.

2. Americano coffee has the longest extraction time, so its caffeine content is relatively higher.

Nowadays, many espresso shops make Americano by adding hot water to Espresso. This brewing method results in a cleaner flavor, avoiding over-extraction bitterness and astringency.

FrontStreet Coffee makes Americano coffee using this method.

We hope this helps everyone understand the difference between Americano and espresso. Perhaps the question is simple, but even at FrontStreet Coffee, we weren't very clear about the difference between Americano and espresso when we first started. 😭😭😭
