Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee Growing Region: The Aroma and Flavor Characteristics of Pour-Over Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Beans
As is well known, authentic Blue Mountain coffee enjoys considerable prestige in the international coffee community. Blue Mountain coffee originates from the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica. Due to its growing environment requiring an altitude of approximately 1,000 to 1,700 meters, coupled with the extremely limited production of Blue Mountain coffee, the price is quite expensive. Consequently, coffees that imitate Blue Mountain flavor have appeared on the market to meet the demands of coffee enthusiasts.
A Brief History of Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee
Jamaica's coffee history is long and can be traced back to the 18th century. According to FrontStreet Coffee's research, in 1717, French King Louis XV ordered the introduction of coffee cultivation to Jamaica. In the mid-1720s, Jamaica's Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes imported Arabica coffee seeds from Martinique and began promoting cultivation in the St. Andrew region.
This allowed coffee trees to take root in Jamaica and thrive in the Blue Mountain range. Blue Mountain coffee was thus born and was subdivided into different grades based on producing region and altitude, such as high-altitude Blue Mountain coffee, High Mountain coffee, and regular Jamaica Prime coffee. These different grades directly affect the quality and price of the coffee, providing coffee enthusiasts with a rich variety of choices.
Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee Growing Region
Blue Mountain coffee comes from Jamaica, an island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, and on this island there is a very famous mountain range—the Blue Mountains.
The Blue Mountain range, situated on the island, benefits from a unique geographical environment that provides an excellent microclimate. Rich volcanic activity has endowed the soil here with abundant minerals, providing rich nutrients for coffee trees. High altitude, abundant water sources, and mild climate conditions together create an ideal growing environment for coffee trees. Therefore, Blue Mountain coffee excels in flavor and aroma, with balanced and harmonious notes of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness. Its rich and solid texture is beloved by coffee enthusiasts.
Jamaica Coffee Bean Grading System
I. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee
To distinguish Blue Mountain coffee from regular Jamaican coffee, the Jamaican government established a specialized grading system. According to certification by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica (JCIB), only Typica variety coffee produced in the Blue Mountain range at altitudes of approximately 910m-1700m can be called "Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee." The certified cultivation area is only 6,000 hectares, accounting for one-third of the entire Blue Mountain region. Only about 15% of all coffee produced in Jamaica can bear the prestigious name of Blue Mountain coffee. The higher the altitude, the more difficult the harvesting and the higher the labor management costs. Additionally, strict quality grading is applied to green beans, classified as NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and Peaberry (PB) based on defect rate and bean size.
- No.1 - 17/18 screen, defect bean ratio not exceeding 2%.
- No.2 - 16/17 screen, defect bean ratio not exceeding 2%.
- No.3 - 15/16 screen, defect bean ratio not exceeding 2%.
- Peaberry - 10MS, defect bean ratio not exceeding 2%.
II. Jamaica High Mountain Coffee
Coffee produced at altitudes of 500-910 meters in the Jamaica Blue Mountain region is called High Mountain coffee. It is second only to Blue Mountain coffee in quality and is known in the industry as the sibling variety of Blue Mountain coffee. Due to the extremely limited production of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, if you want to taste Jamaican-flavored coffee, Jamaica High Mountain coffee is your best choice.
III. Jamaica Prime Coffee
Coffee grown in regions outside the Blue Mountain range is called Jamaica Prime coffee, cultivated at altitudes below 500 meters.
On the other hand, it's worth noting that currently, international standards have not established strict detailed coffee grade distinctions and industry standards, which makes it difficult for ordinary consumers to distinguish authentic from counterfeit coffee. In our country, most consumers have relatively limited knowledge of coffee, making it difficult to accurately distinguish genuine from fake Blue Mountain coffee.
FrontStreet Coffee shares a small tip: authentic Blue Mountain coffee is not packaged in burlap bags but rather comes in distinctive coffee packaging (Blue Mountain barrels). Therefore, this can serve as an indicator for distinguishing genuine from fake Blue Mountain coffee. Moreover, the wooden barrels feature a tropical tree frog logo, which is the Rainforest Alliance mark, indicating that these coffee beans are organic and grown in a pollution-free environment throughout their cultivation.
Additionally, because the producers and distributors of Blue Mountain coffee must be licensed by the Jamaican government and authorized by the Jamaica Coffee Board, all exported Blue Mountain batches undergo quality inspection and certification by the Coffee Board and carry certification labels.
Therefore, when purchasing Blue Mountain coffee, you can ask the merchant to provide relevant documentation. FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee is produced by Clifton Mountain Estate and comes with quality certification certificates issued by the Jamaica Coffee Board, authorized sales certificates issued by Blue Mountain coffee manufacturers, and certificates of origin for Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee.
Flavor Characteristics of Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee
When we purchase a package of high-quality Blue Mountain coffee beans, the first thing to study is how to brew it well. Below, FrontStreet Coffee will discuss our brewing approach using Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee from our bean selection.
FrontStreet Coffee recommends using coffee beans within their optimal flavor period. If the roasting date has exceeded more than a month, some aromas may have dissipated, and woody flavors might even develop. The coffee beans shipped by FrontStreet Coffee are roasted within 5 days, so you should receive them when they are at their most aromatic peak flavor stage.
Classic Blue Mountain flavor features rich chocolate, roasted nuts, and other aromas, with soft acidity and a rich mouthfeel. To restore the classic taste, FrontStreet Coffee's roasters choose medium-dark roasting, highlighting roasted aromas while preserving some acidity. During cupping of Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee beans, FrontStreet Coffee discovered balanced flavors of acidity, sweetness, aroma, bitterness, and richness. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee's baristas have also developed corresponding brewing approaches based on this flavor profile.
