Puerto Rico Coffee

It is generally believed that the original coffee tree species in Puerto Rico were brought to Martinique Island (in the French West Indies of the Caribbean) by the French in 1723, and quickly spread to Puerto Rico in 1736. Due to the mountainous environment combined with suitable climate and soil, it soon became a major export to Europe. The coffee produced in the Yauco region gained exceptional fame in Europe for its unique flavor, and in the 1890s was even used as a standard for other countries to imitate. Puerto Rico's coffee trees are of the Arabica species, including Bourbon, Puerto Rico Bourbon variety, Caturra, and Limani varieties. Today, Yauco remains the representative of Puerto Rico coffee. Due to its excellent quality, limited production, and high labor costs, its market price has always remained high. Yauco Selecto beans are rated as having a rich and thick texture, balanced flavor, and a mild taste with considerable complexity that is not monotonous. With low acidity and low bitterness similar to Jamaican Blue Mountain, it is also one of the finest coffees in the Caribbean.

In 1736, coffee trees were introduced to Puerto Rico from Martinique. Early coffee was mostly cultivated by Corsican immigrants. By 1896, Puerto Rico's coffee production ranked sixth in the world.

The country's coffee is generally carefully cultivated, with pure taste, aromatic fragrance, and heavy beans. Among them, the finest varieties rank among the world's famous brands. The highest quality coffee is Yauco Selecto, where "Selecto" means "selected."

Yauco Selecto coffee is only grown on three farms in the southwestern part of the island nation. Its flavor is aromatic and intense, with a long-lasting aftertaste. This coffee commands a high price, and its aroma can compete with any other coffee variety in the world.

The mountainous climate here is mild, giving plants a longer maturation period (from October to February of the following year), and the soil quality is excellent clay. The people here have always adopted an eco-friendly, meticulously intensive cultivation method, only picking fully mature coffee beans, which are then placed in rotary devices for washing for 48 hours. Yauco Selecto coffee beans are stored with their parchment until shipment, when the outer skin is removed only upon order fulfillment to ensure optimal freshness. When goods are submitted, relevant practitioners from the U.S. government, such as FDA and USEA, will also be present. Their work is to supervise whether producers comply with federal regulations. There are also practitioners from local appraisal committees who sample one bag from every 50 bags and conduct quality assessment using international measuring instruments.
