Sulawesi Island Overview

Sulawesi Island (Celebes/ˈsɛlɛbiz/, formerly known as "Celebes") is a large island in eastern Indonesia.

By area, Sulawesi is the eleventh largest island in the world, with a total area of 174,600 square kilometers. Located in eastern Indonesia and south of the Philippines, it has a very distinctive shape resembling a large K letter with four peninsulas. The central part of the island consists of rugged mountainous terrain, making travel between the four peninsulas rare, with sea connections often more convenient than land routes.

The administrative region of Sulawesi Island is divided into 6 provinces: West Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and Gorontalo. The largest city is Makassar in the southwest, and Manado in the north is also a major city.

Coffee Characteristics

Compared to other Indonesian islands, 95% of coffee trees on Sulawesi are Arabica. Well-processed coffee exhibits grapefruit, berry, nut, and spice aromas. The taste is aromatic and delicious, with low acidity and full body.

Sulawesi coffee production accounts for about 2% of Indonesia's total, with varieties including old Typica, S795, and Jember-related cultivars.

The wet-hulling method is the traditional post-processing technique, which gives coffee beans a distinctive dark green color typical of Indonesian beans. However, many producers have switched to the Central American washed method, which helps increase both yield and quality.

Main Growing Regions

The main growing regions include: Mamasa, Tana Toraja, Gowa and Sinjal, and Enrekang, with Toraja being the most well-known.

Detailed Introduction

Sulawesi Island: Sulawesi is also one of Indonesia's famous coffee-producing islands, possessing unique natural conditions and a considerable history of coffee cultivation. Its former name was Celebes, and Sulawesi is one of the oldest islands in the archipelago, with exposed rocks dating back over millions of years. Yellow-red podzolic soils are found in coffee production areas. These soils often contain several layers of clay beneath the surface, rich in iron content. The most famous growing region is Toraja, located in the highlands of southeastern Sulawesi. Kalosi, located south of Toraja, is the main metropolitan area of this region. It is also most commonly used as the representative name for Sulawesi coffee. It is renowned for its full body, rich flavor, and low, lively acidity.

More than three hundred years ago, during the great age of exploration when colonialism prevailed, from the moment the Dutch first scattered coffee seeds onto the land of Indonesia, they sprouted, took root, and flourished. Today, Indonesia's coffee production has firmly established itself among the world's top five coffee-exporting countries. Due to the numerous island characteristics within its territory like stars in the sky, coffee beans are identified and named after their islands: there are Mandheling from Sumatra Island, Toraja from Sulawesi Island, and even Java coffee named directly after Java Island.

Sulawesi Island, shaped like an inverted spoon, has high mountains in its center and vast, distant roads.

The Indonesian territory of Sulawesi Island is crossed by the equator line across the northern peninsula, spanning 170,000 square kilometers—about five times the size of Taiwan. The Tana Toraja highland is located in the central part of the island, with rugged mountain terrain and countless peaks over a thousand meters. The volcanic geological soil provides perfect geographical conditions for coffee cultivation.
