Gatomboya Processing Station

Located in Nyeri, Kenya, the Gatomboya Processing Station belongs to the Barichu Cooperative Society, along with the Gatathiri Processing Station. Originally part of the Mathira Cooperative Society, Gatomboya joined Barichu in 1996 and received the cooperative's green bean quality award in 2005-2006.

Gatomboya collects green coffee beans from 698 small farmers across four nearby villages. These small farmers, along with the processing station's manager and supervisors, receive professional training in green bean processing and machine operation at the cooperative every two years, with training sessions lasting two weeks.

Exceptional Quality and Processing

Gatomboya is situated in Kenya's most renowned Nyeri region and stands as arguably the most representative washed processing station in the area. Coffee from this station creates an annual buying frenzy, consistently facing supply shortages. The processed green beans undergo the strictest selection standards—only coffee cherries at optimal ripeness are harvested for processing. This approach requires harvesting to be conducted in multiple stages, increasing operational costs, but these efforts are reflected in the exceptional cup quality.

Once coffee cherries arrive at the processing station, they are immediately sorted and graded, followed by depulping. The coffee then undergoes Kenya's traditional double fermentation and washed processing method, before being sun-dried on African raised beds. The green beans from this station have earned numerous accolades, with nearly all internationally renowned roasters featuring them annually.
