Cauca: A Premier Coffee Growing Region in Colombia
Cauca province is one of Colombia's renowned specialty coffee producing regions, bordered by the Nariño region to the west and the Huila province to the east. Coffee cultivation is distributed across 29 administrative districts at elevations ranging from 1,758 to 2,100 meters above sea level.
Similar to other specialty coffee producing regions in southern Colombia, this area exhibits considerable homogeneity in terms of climate, rainy seasons, and volcanic soil factors. A consistent rainfall cycle (following the dry season from August to September comes abundant rainy season precipitation) provides favorable conditions for coffee tree fruiting. High-intensity sunlight and low rainfall coincide with the flowering season (July-August), which also occurs when the region is outside the doldrums, providing advantageous flowering conditions for coffee trees. These factors also contribute to the concentrated harvest during the first season of alternating years. Compared to other coffee growing regions in Colombia, what shows more climatic variability here is the diurnal temperature: daily average temperatures can be as low as 11°C, with daytime averages of 18°C (nighttime averages of 4°C).
This dramatic diurnal temperature variation is a contributing factor to the development of Cauca coffee. The lower nighttime temperatures caused by high elevation slow down the maturation of coffee beans, enhancing acidity and imparting distinctive sweetness.
Sotara: Heart of Cauca's Coffee Region
Sotara is a small town in central Cauca, while Sotara Volcano belongs to the Andes mountain system, providing the nutrient-rich soil necessary for coffee bean growth. The coffee cultivation area in this region spans approximately 911 hectares, consisting of mountainous terrain and three famous rivers: the Caueta River, the Cauca River, and the Magdalena River.
