Kilimanjaro Coffee Origins

The Kilimanjaro mountain in the southwestern plateau region of Tanzania reaches an altitude of 5893m and is part of a volcanic zone. Coffee cultivation in this region dates back a century when it was introduced by German missionaries. At that time, the European market had an enormous demand for coffee, causing coffee growing areas to gradually expand throughout East Africa. However, due to crude initial cultivation techniques and post-harvest processing methods, it didn't attract much attention in the market and may have even been classified as general commercial coffee grade! But as coffee quality from various producing regions gradually improved worldwide, prices also improved, increasing production profits. Small farmers in the Kilimanjaro region became willing to form various types of alliances or cooperatives to help each other and exchange knowledge, effectively improving production quality and gradually building the reputation of Kilimanjaro Arabica Coffee, which benefits from superior growing conditions.

Geographic Advantages

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest independent mountain. The cool climate and fertile volcanic organic soil are very conducive to coffee growth. Growing areas are mostly concentrated in mountainous regions at elevations of 1400-1800m. The main cultivated varieties are Kent and Bourbon. Original forests provide good shade. The harvest season runs from October to February of the following year. Farmers harvest fully ripe coffee fruits, process them with washed fermentation, and naturally dry them in the sun. During this process, particularly rigorous screening is performed to achieve the best quality for sale.

Quality Recognition

The region's long-term commitment to high-quality coffee has gained recognition, winning the "Best Quality in the Smallholder Category" awarded by TCA (Tanzania Coffee Association) in 2001, 2003, and 2006. It also received the honor of being one of the best African specialty coffees showcased by the Eastern African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) in 2005 and 2007! Currently, it is mainly sold to fair trade markets in the United States and Europe, greatly improving the living conditions and medical and educational facilities for small farmers in the local area.

Flavor Profile

Coming from the slopes of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak known as the "Spine of Africa," the sunny climate produces coffee rich in thick fruit aromas and light peach fragrance.

Kilimanjaro coffee is grown in the most suitable environment for coffee cultivation in the mountainous grasslands of Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro AA can be considered very representative among African coffees.

When consumed as a single-origin, the instant strong acidity and astringent taste are most suitable for refreshing the spirit.

When blending, adding Colombian or Brazilian coffee can enhance complexity and richness.
