Honduras Coffee Regions and Classification

According to IHCAFE data, Honduran coffee can be divided into six major regions, mainly located in the western and southern areas: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical, and El Paraiso. The average cultivation altitude for premium coffee in these regions is 1,100 meters above sea level. In these regions, 69% of cultivated coffee is HG grade, 12% is SHG, and 19% is CS. Main varieties include Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, Villa Sarchi, and Lempira. Currently, grading is mainly based on altitude. The relationship between Honduran coffee grades and altitude is as follows:

Coffee Grade Classifications

The following three grades and their specified altitudes are:

Standard grade: cultivation altitude of 610-915 meters

High Grown grade: cultivation altitude of 915-1,220 meters

Strictly High Grown grade: cultivation altitude above 1,221 meters

Montecillos Region

The Montecillos region is located between La Paz, Comayagua, Santa Bárbara, and Intibuca areas. It features rich fruit and sweet aromas, complemented by lemon and floral notes. Lemon and fruit aromas are its important characteristics, especially peach and orange. Altitude: 1,200-1,600 meters.

Major Coffee Producing Regions

Honduras has three main producing regions that account for more than half of the country's total coffee production.

Montecillos: The highest altitude region in Honduras, featuring bright, complex coffee flavors with citrus aromas.

Copan: Copan beans have chocolate flavors, rich mouthfeel, and high sweetness.

Agalta: Coffee beans from this region have tropical fruit aromas, sweeter taste, balanced acidity, and chocolate notes.

Generally, Honduran coffee is elegant with fruity characteristics, tasting like juice, sometimes with nutty and toffee aromas.
