Guatemala Atitlan Lake Region

Guatemala, renowned for its highland terrain, is one of the world's top ten coffee exporters. Its high-altitude Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) varieties with unique flavors perform exceptionally well among the diverse coffee-producing regions, yielding impressive high-quality coffee beans. Guatemalan coffee offers rich flavor variations and intense acidity, with floral and fruity aromas, sometimes revealing subtle spice notes. From medium to full body, with high complexity, it represents the best of complex-style coffee. Its famous regions include Antigua, Coban, Atitlan, Huehuetenango, and San Marco. From purely sweet and pleasant types to spiced complex varieties, to extremely refreshing high-acidity coffees, Guatemala offers them all.

Atitlan Lake

The Atitlan Lake region is one of Guatemala's four major volcanic coffee zones. The mountainous Atitlan region, compared to Huehuetenango, imparts coffee with a more relaxed personality, though without compromising flavor. Atitlan's soil is rich in fertile organic matter. 90% of coffee is planted along extremely steep slopes extending to Atitlan Lake, Guatemala's largest and most famous volcanic lake. Daily cool breezes from Lake Atitlán influence the area, giving this region's microclimate its own distinctive style and characteristics.

ATITLAN

In Atitlan, coffee farms are situated around Lake Atitlan. The lake is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) and has captivated many writers and tourists over the years with its breathtaking beauty. Strong winds are common here in late morning and early afternoon, which locals call "xocomil," meaning "the wind that carries away sins." Here, several private nature reserves have been established to protect the region's biodiversity and help prevent deforestation. Due to rising labor costs and competition for labor, coffee production faces pressure. Urban expansion has also increased pressure on land use, with some farmers finding it more profitable to sell their land than continue growing coffee.

Traditional Atitlan Region / Average Temperature 20°C-23°C

Among Guatemala's three major volcanic regions, this area's soil is richest in organic matter. 90% of coffee plants are grown along extremely steep volcanic slopes, with daily cool breezes from Lake Atitlán influencing the area, giving this region's microclimate its own distinctive style and characteristics.

Coffee Flavor

The coffee features rich aroma with intoxicating fragrance, and a flavor profile that balances acidity with sweetness.
