Guatemala, located in Central America, is the world's sixth-largest coffee producer. Coffee has always been the economic lifeblood of Guatemala, with half of the domestic workforce engaged in agricultural activities.

Guatemala has eight coffee-producing regions, boasting tropical rainforests, volcanic geology, highland valleys, and proximity to both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, creating over 300 microclimates. This diversity has resulted in unique flavor profiles from each region. Among these, Antigua and Highland Huehue are the most renowned for their coffee.

Huehuetenango: A Premium Coffee Region

Huehuetenango is one of Guatemala's three major coffee-producing regions, situated in the northwestern part of the country. Its fertile soil and abundant rainfall, combined with the unique cloud belt formed by the high-altitude enclosed valley climate, create excellent external climatic conditions blessed by nature. Coffee produced in this region is known for its rich, lively, and high-density fruit acidity, often winning awards in Guatemala's coffee cupping competitions with this distinctive style.

Despite having treacherous terrain and road conditions, everything is worthwhile when dedicated to finding stunning, high-quality coffee. Huehuetenango is an extremely high mountain region, but it is nourished by warm, dry winds from Mexico's Tehuantepec Plain, allowing quality coffee to grow and thrive in these high-altitude areas without being destroyed by frost. This area is also one of the main birthplaces of ancient Mayan culture. The remaining buildings still remind people of this place's great history and heritage. Silver, lead, gold, copper, and other minerals can be discovered in Huehuetenango, but the local surprisingly excellent quality coffee is the true precious treasure. Coffee has been cultivated in this region since the 19th century, continuously improving and refining processing methods to enhance overall quality, gradually bringing coffee to a state of perfection. Some high-quality coffee estates are located in valleys between mountains, where unique microclimate changes create distinctive coffee flavors.

Flavor Profile of Huehuetenango Coffee

Huehuetenango coffee possesses a unique bean character with strong body and intense aroma. Coffee from this region is extremely diverse and varied. Beyond displaying rich chocolate flavors, it also carries aromas of pear, apple, and cinnamon. These elements combine to create a delicate, smooth texture like syrup, gradually revealing mild burnt cedar wood notes and caramel sweetness. It has high clarity with a long, layered aftertaste.

Among the three non-volcanic regions, this area is the driest and highest-altitude single-origin coffee producing region. It is also the most rugged and remote area in Guatemala. Due to dry, warm winds from Mexico, the mountainous areas are free from frost, allowing coffee cultivation at altitudes approaching 6,500 feet.
