This unique region, which receives the country's first rays of dawn each day, is Guatemala's easternmost coffee-producing area. New Oriental (Nuevo Oriente) is one of the seven specialty coffee regions defined by the Guatemalan Coffee Association (Anacafe) in 1980. This production area is defined as the land between Barberena, Jutiapa, and Chiquimula.
Since 1950, coffee in this region has been grown almost entirely by small producers. Now, what was once one of Guatemala's poorest and most isolated areas is filled with vitality and continuously growing. Nearly every farm on the mountain has become its own coffee production unit. Most coffee from the New Oriental region comes from small, family-owned estates that also combine coffee cultivation with other basic crops for daily sustenance. This region has rapidly gained fame among coffee connoisseurs, and their demand for this coffee increases year by year. The result of this situation is that every farm on the mountain has transitioned to coffee cultivation, replacing other crops as the primary product and source of income.
Situated in a region with frequent past volcanic activity, the New Oriental region has a cloudy and rainy climate. The soil here consists of metamorphic rocks evenly mixed with many minerals, making it different from the soil of other volcanic regions.
