Ethiopia's Major Coffee Growing Regions

Ethiopia coffee mainly has eight major growing regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Ethiopian coffee enjoys extremely high ratings in Taiwan, especially the three relatively famous regions of Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe, which have garnered particular interest and passion from domestic coffee enthusiasts. The Sidama province is located in southern Ethiopia, with Arsi province to the north, extending east to connect with Bale province, and the Gamu Gofa provincial administrative region to the west.

The Sidama provincial administrative region governs two extremely famous producing areas: Yirgacheffe and Kochere. The industry is primarily agricultural, with coffee growing areas located around the East African Rift Valley. Wanago town is located in the Gedeo zone of southern Ethiopia, with Gedeo situated about 5 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe town. Within Gedeo's jurisdiction, the most well-known areas are Yirgacheffe and Kochere.

Oumer-Abedu Processing Station

The Oumer-Abedu processing station belongs to the Wanago cooperative, which is composed of over 700 local small coffee farmers working together in production. Due to the numerous neighboring cooperatives, coffee batches from this small producing region have consistently shown surprisingly excellent performance. Carefully selected fully ripe coffee cherries undergo careful sorting of defective beans during the drying process on raised beds, enhancing flavor clarity and consistency, ensuring each production batch achieves optimal quality.

These small farmers have an average coffee cultivation area of about 1 hectare, with growing altitudes ranging from 1900-2100 meters. The coffee varieties are mainly local Heirloom varieties. This region has an annual rainfall of 1900mm, with 3-4 months being the dry season and 8-9 months being the rainy season. After small coffee farmers sort and grade red cherry-colored coffee fruits, they are processed by the nearby Oumer-Abedu processing station, where they are placed directly on raised beds for natural sun-drying. During the first few days of drying, the cherries are turned every 2-3 hours to prevent over-fermentation.

After four to six weeks of sun-drying, when moisture content reaches 12% or below, the beans undergo cupping grading and are auctioned by quantity through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX). Typically, sun-dried processed beans are stored as parchment coffee until the hulling work is performed just before export.
