Tanzania Coffee: East Africa's Hidden Gem

East Africa is home to many excellent coffee-producing regions, including well-known ones like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. Tanzania is another East African country that produces fine coffee. In 2008, Zhi Da Coffee introduced the aromatic and sweet Tanzania Kigoma Peaberries, which left a deep impression on many people.

Tanzania Coffee Industry Overview

Coffee is Tanzania's largest agricultural crop, with approximately 450,000 people engaged in coffee-related agriculture. Due to its proximity to Kenya, Tanzania's coffee flavor profile is similar to Kenyan coffee. However, inconvenient transportation and outdated coffee infrastructure have often led to coffee contamination during shipping or damage during processing due to insufficient equipment. This has created a negative impression of Tanzanian coffee, with people believing that Tanzanian coffee generally has less fresh acidity, less intensity, and a more moderate taste profile.

However, in recent years, the southern Ruvuma region, located near the Indian Ocean with convenient transportation access, combined with a pre-order system with European and American green coffee buyers where coffee is only produced after orders are placed, has ensured coffee quality.

Tanzania Coffee Characteristics

Tanzania's main coffee variety is Arabica, processed using the natural washed method. Coffee grading is the same as Kenya's, with AAA grade being the best. Coffee sales utilize both specialty auction and direct sales channels. The 2010 new season introduced coffee from the Ruvuma region. The green coffee beans display an emerald green color, with large and uniformly sized beans that have better half-rounded shapes compared to Kenya AA grade.
