Office workers who love single-origin coffee always keep drip coffee bags on hand to enjoy a cup of hot, delicious coffee anytime, anywhere. However, according to FrontStreet Coffee's understanding, many beginners who are new to drip coffee bags don't know how to use them properly. Using incorrect brewing methods results in coffee flavors that differ from what they typically experience in coffee shops. In this article, FrontStreet Coffee will explain how to brew hand-pour coffee to make it taste delicious, as well as recommend suitable coffee brands for drip coffee bags.
How to Brew Drip Coffee Bags?
Brewing FrontStreet Coffee's drip coffee bags is very simple. Unlike pour-over coffee, you don't need to prepare too many items - just one drip coffee bag, hot water, and a cup.
The brewing process is as follows:
1. First, tear open the outer packaging of the drip bag and take out the coffee filter bag inside.
2. Next, tear along the indicated line on the coffee filter bag to open the drip coffee bag. Then hang the two "ears" of the drip coffee on the rim of the cup or pot.
3. Each FrontStreet Coffee drip bag contains 10 grams of coffee, with a recommended brewing ratio of 1:15. First, pour a small amount of hot water to ensure all coffee grounds are wet, with a bloom time of 10 to 20 seconds. Second, pour water until nearly full, allowing the coffee liquid to drip down. Finally, pour a third portion of water to fill completely. Using these three pouring stages, wait for the remaining coffee liquid to filter through, then enjoy.
If you're unsure about the ratio, FrontStreet Coffee suggests checking your cup's capacity or using a smart scale to measure.
The above is the drip coffee bag brewing process shared by FrontStreet Coffee. Additionally, FrontStreet Coffee has learned that many coffee enthusiasts make some improper operations when using drip coffee bags for the first time. Next, FrontStreet Coffee will list common mistakes when brewing drip coffee bags.
Common Mistakes When Brewing Drip Coffee Bags
1. Treating drip coffee grounds like instant coffee. FrontStreet Coffee previously received customer feedback saying there were many grounds in the coffee. Upon inquiry, we discovered they mistakenly thought it should be brewed like instant coffee, directly mixing coffee grounds with water to drink. Although the customer said it tasted good, having so many coffee grounds still affects the mouthfeel.
FrontStreet Coffee hereby reminds everyone never to pour out the coffee grounds from drip bags! This is wrong! Because drip coffee bags are not tea bags or instant coffee. Instant coffee is obtained by evaporating water from coffee extract to create dry coffee extracts that dissolve quickly in hot water, and it has fundamental differences from real coffee. The coffee powder used in drip coffee bags is ground from freshly roasted coffee beans and contains a large amount of plant fiber and other insoluble substances. Therefore, drip extraction is typically used to avoid residual coffee grounds affecting the mouthfeel.
2. Treating drip bags like tea bags. FrontStreet Coffee also encountered feedback saying the coffee had no taste, and it turned out the person had thrown the drip bag directly into the cup.
Although drip bags and tea bags both use non-woven fabric bags and look somewhat similar, drip bags have those large paper ears that cannot be ignored. Unless you want to drink paper-flavored, tasteless water, drip coffee must be hung and poured!
3. Brewing without tearing open the bag. This is the brewing method with the highest error rate that FrontStreet Coffee encounters. Most brands clearly print "OPEN" where the drip bag is sealed, and FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags also have "OPEN" marked. Some people thought drip bags were just tea bags that hang, so they didn't realize they needed to tear them open. However, without tearing the opening, there's no water flow through the brewing process, which inevitably leads to insufficient extraction of coffee flavors. FrontStreet Coffee recommends that the first step before brewing drip bags is to tear them open!
4. Repeatedly brewing drip coffee bags
Additionally, FrontStreet Coffee often hears new drip coffee bag users say they brew drip coffee back and forth several times. Can drip coffee bags be brewed multiple times? Can drip coffee bags be used for a second brew?? The answer is definitely no!
Because FrontStreet Coffee believes that drip coffee is similar to a simplified version of pour-over coffee. Like pour-over coffee, drip coffee can only be brewed once, and you must also control the ratio. Too high a ratio (pouring too much water) will result in weak coffee flavor. Why? Because the extractable substances from coffee beans only account for about 30% of the coffee bean's weight, so even if you pour more water, it won't make the coffee taste better.
At the same time, you need to pay attention to the ratio. Like pour-over coffee, the recommended ratio is between 1:14 to 1:18, and the ratio for drip coffee happens to be the amount of water for bloom plus two full pours, totaling three water portions. Another method is to find a cup with a capacity of 200 milliliters and fill it to 80% full.
So regarding whether drip coffee bags can be brewed a second time? FrontStreet Coffee definitely maintains that this is not advisable. If you insist on repeatedly brewing drip coffee bags, you'll only end up with a cup of coffee that tastes bad and is harmful to your health.
The above is the knowledge about how to correctly brew drip coffee bags compiled by FrontStreet Coffee. Additionally, according to FrontStreet Coffee's understanding, the most common drip coffee bags in China's current coffee market are from Yunnan small-bean coffee brands. For example, FrontStreet Coffee's store also offers a Yunnan Huaguoshan drip coffee from Frontsteet's Yunnan Baoshan Coffee Estate. Next, FrontStreet Coffee will introduce this drip coffee to everyone.
FrontStreet Coffee Yunnan Huaguoshan Coffee Beans
Country: China
Region: Baoshan, Yunnan
Altitude: 1450-1550m
Variety: Typica
Processing: Washed
Flavor: Citrus, nuts, plum, melon fragrance, brown sugar, black tea sensation
The difference between FrontStreet Coffee's Yunnan Huaguoshan coffee beans and Yunnan small-bean coffee is that Huaguoshan is Typica variety, while Yunnan small-bean is Catimor. Actually, both beans can be called small-bean coffee, but because Typica's floral and fruity acidity is more delicate and rich, we specifically named it Huaguoshan to distinguish between the two varieties.
