01 Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee has been hailed as the world's best coffee for a long time.

Blue Mountain is indeed the name of a mountain. Located in the eastern part of Jamaica Island, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, on clear sunny days when sunlight directly hits the azure sea surface, the mountain peak reflects the brilliant blue light of the seawater. The entire mountain appears to be enveloped in a faint blue hue, hence named Blue Mountain.

Jamaica is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, originally inhabited by indigenous peoples. It was successively a colony of Spain and Britain, gaining independence in 1962, and is now a member of the Commonwealth.

Besides the world-famous Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica is most notable for track and field athletics - the famous sprinter Usain Bolt is Jamaican.

Why is Blue Mountain Coffee delicious?

The highest peak of Blue Mountain reaches 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region. The unique flavor of Blue Mountain Coffee is related to its exceptional geographical location and climate conditions. The Blue Mountain coffee zone lies between 25°N and 25°S latitude. Here, there are fertile new volcanic soils, fresh air without pollution, year-round rainfall, and significant day-night temperature differences. Most importantly, every afternoon, clouds envelop the entire mountaintop, not only providing natural shade for coffee trees but also bringing abundant moisture. Such unique climate conditions make Blue Mountain Coffee's taste and aroma outstanding, creating a perfectly balanced coffee with acidity, sweetness, bitterness, and richness.

Why is Blue Mountain Coffee expensive?

Blue Mountain Coffee is expensive first and foremost because of its excellent quality, possessing all the characteristics of fine coffee. Secondly, Blue Mountain Coffee production is very limited.

Not all coffee produced in the Blue Mountain region is genuine Blue Mountain Coffee. Only coffee grown at elevations above 666 meters can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee produced below 666 meters in the Blue Mountain region is called Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans, which is second only to Blue Mountain Coffee in quality and is known in the industry as the sibling variety of Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain range is called Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans.

Originally, Chinese coffee professionals had a common misconception that only coffee grown above 1,800 meters in the Blue Mountain area could be called Blue Mountain Coffee. In fact, above 1,800 meters on the Blue Mountain range, there is only one estate - Amber, owned by descendants of Chinese people. The owner's surname is Lyn (Lin), with ancestral roots in Guangdong, China. The estate has only 30 hectares of land with very limited production.

Blue Mountain Coffee receives great attention from the Jamaican government and must be grown by estates designated by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB) and requires the following certification. Every step from planting, harvesting, and processing is subject to strict supervision and management.

Jamaica's four designated Blue Mountain Coffee processing factories - Wallenford, Mavis Bank, Silver Hill, and Moy Hall - account for 90% of Blue Mountain Coffee exports, with Wallenford being the most famous, being a Jamaican state-owned estate.

In 1969, the Blue Mountain region was hit by hurricane damage, plunging the coffee industry into crisis. Japanese companies provided financial loans to help Blue Mountain Coffee recover to normal levels, thus ensuring market stability. To express gratitude to Japan, in 1972, Jamaica signed an agreement with Japan, giving Japanese estates shares and preferential purchasing rights. 90% of Blue Mountain Coffee is exported to Japan after maturity. Therefore, very little Blue Mountain Coffee is available for purchase by other countries, and prices are very high, though this situation has improved in recent years.

Consumer注意事项:

Be careful - any coffee on the market called "Blue Mountain flavor" or "Blue Mountain blend" contains not a single Blue Mountain coffee bean.

Because you cannot see the green bean packaging, there's no way to determine if it's genuine Blue Mountain Coffee, so don't risk ordering an expensive cup of Blue Mountain at unfamiliar coffee shops. Moreover, even if it is genuine Blue Mountain Coffee, due to its price, few people order it, which can lead to the coffee being very stale and not conducive to flavor appreciation.

If you really want to try it, we recommend that you let FrontStreet Coffee help you purchase freshly roasted Blue Mountain Coffee, or you can request certification materials from merchants, and you can verify authenticity through green bean packaging and import documents.

At this point, I believe you should have some doubts about your Blue Mountain Coffee?

Is my Blue Mountain really Blue Mountain? Or is it just specially blended Blue Mountain or Blue Mountain flavored coffee?

So-called specially blended Blue Mountain is a blend of other coffee beans mixed to simulate the flavor of Blue Mountain Coffee. Conscientious merchants will tell you this is a simulated Blue Mountain Coffee blend, while unscrupulous merchants will tell you it's coffee beans produced in Blue Mountain. And the price difference between these two beans is truly worlds apart. To drink a genuine cup of Blue Mountain, you must find a reputable coffee bean supplier.

Blue Mountain Coffee perfectly integrates coffee's characteristic flavors - acidity, bitterness, sweetness, richness, and aroma - all five are essential. Blue Mountain combines coffee's acidity and bitterness, aroma and purity in perfect balance, achieving perfectly balanced Blue Mountain Coffee. What distinguishes it from regular coffee is its richness, which brings a more substantial mellow flavor due to the perfect balance of acidity, bitterness, sweetness, and aroma, creating a long-lasting fragrant charm that often captivates people. Coffee's characteristic tannic acid, combined with Blue Mountain's richness, transforms into a sweet, pervasive fruity aroma.

Jamaica

Famous worldwide as the origin of 'Blue Mountain Coffee'. Jamaica's coffee production is polarized in quality - coffee grown in lowlands is very ordinary, only used for making or blending into cheap coffee, but highland-grown coffee is considered one of the world's highest-grade varieties, mainly Jamaica Blue Mountain & Jamaica High Mountain. Jamaica Blue Mountain is considered the world's most famous, expensive, and controversial coffee. Named for growing above 3,000 feet in the Blue Mountain region. It possesses all the characteristics of coffee - rich, aromatic, full-bodied flavor, moderate and perfect acidity, with excellent balance of the three tastes (sweetness, acidity, bitterness), making it the ultimate coffee. Generally consumed as single origin. However, due to extremely limited production and high price, genuine Blue Mountain is rarely seen on the market, mostly being blended Blue Mountain with very similar taste. Jamaica High Mountain refers to coffee grown at lower elevations than Blue Mountain, with quality and taste that cannot match Blue Mountain.

Blue Mountain Coffee beans originate from the Blue Mountain range in Jamaica. Jamaica means "island of springs" in indigenous language. Blue Mountain is located in the eastern mountain range of Jamaica, and Blue Mountain slopes are dotted with coffee farms. The coffee-growing area of Blue Mountain is approximately 1,600 meters, with the highest peak at 2,256 meters. So-called Blue Mountain Coffee refers to coffee beans planted and produced in the Blue Mountain region, but coffee grown in other high-altitude areas of Jamaica can only be called High Mountain Coffee. Therefore, production is extremely limited. Besides the unique terroir environment, completely hand-picked coffee cherries make Blue Mountain Coffee beans even more precious. Its taste is delicious - besides balanced acidity and bitterness with good sweet aftertaste, it has a unique high mountain tea flavor, truly deserving of being called the king of coffees.

Produced in Jamaica's Blue Mountain range. Blue Mountain Coffee has very low caffeine content, less than half that of other coffees, meeting modern health concepts.

The unique flavor of Blue Mountain Coffee is related to Blue Mountain's exceptional geographical location and climate conditions. Blue Mountain lies in the coffee belt between 25°N and 25°S latitude, with fertile new volcanic soils, fresh air without pollution, year-round rainfall, and significant day-night temperature differences. Most importantly, every afternoon, clouds envelop the entire mountaintop, not only providing natural shade for coffee trees but also bringing abundant moisture, making Blue Mountain Coffee's taste and aroma outstanding.

Only coffee grown above 1,800 meters in the Blue Mountain region can be called Blue Mountain Coffee. One coffee enthusiast is even more "demanding," insisting: "Only coffee grown at 2,256 meters is Blue Mountain Coffee." Coffee beans grown at lower elevations on Jamaica Island, due to different quality, can only be named "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee." Additionally, the same coffee varieties, whether planted in Hawaii, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, or any other place with similar climates, cannot produce the taste of Blue Mountain Coffee beans.

World-famous Blue Mountain Coffee, produced from Jamaica's Blue Mountain range.

The Blue Mountain range is located in the eastern part of Jamaica Island. This mountain has such a beautiful name because a British soldier who came to Jamaica Island saw the peak enveloped in blue light and exclaimed: "Look! A blue mountain!" Thus, it was named "Blue Mountain." In reality, Jamaica Island is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea.

On clear days, sunlight shines on the sea surface, and the surrounding mountains are enveloped in a faint, mysterious blue atmosphere due to the refraction of the azure seawater, appearing ethereal and mysterious.

Most of the Blue Mountain range is above 1,800 meters in elevation, with its highest peak at 2,256 meters, also the highest peak in the Caribbean Sea region and a famous tourist destination.

Unique Climate

The first coffee to appear on Jamaica Island was brought from Latin America's Haiti in 1728. By 1790, some coffee farmers among refugees from Haiti brought coffee cultivation techniques here. In 1838, Jamaica abolished slavery, allowing freed slaves to cultivate their own land. Freed slaves moved to the mountains to specialize in growing coffee and exported it to Britain. Coffee gained appreciation from British high society and gradually became famous. This coffee is the Blue Mountain Coffee that fascinates coffee lovers worldwide today.

Pure Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee perfectly integrates coffee's unique acidity, bitterness, sweetness, and richness, forming a strong, attractive, elegant aroma that other coffees cannot match. Jim, general manager of the American Pete's company famous for coffee and tea, described Blue Mountain Coffee: "Its aroma is fragrant, smooth, and rich, making me feel it's as precious as gemstones." It is precisely because Blue Mountain Coffee's flavor is moderate and perfect that it is generally consumed as black coffee. Blue Mountain Coffee has very low caffeine content, less than half that of other coffees, meeting modern health concepts.

Production Traditions

Blue Mountain Coffee's ability to maintain its premium status today is inseparable from local business policies. In 1932, Jamaica passed policies encouraging coffee production. The local government, unlike most coffee-producing countries, did not massively grow varieties with high yield but poor quality to increase output. Instead, they prioritized quality, preferring to sacrifice coffee production quantity to ensure Blue Mountain Coffee's quality. Therefore, Jamaica is currently one of the countries with the least coffee production in the world. Brazil, the world's largest coffee exporter, produces 30 million bags of coffee annually, while Blue Mountain Coffee produces only about 40,000 bags annually.

Additionally, the processing and production of Blue Mountain Coffee is extremely meticulous. Processing, roasting, packaging, etc., all have strict and detailed standards, specifying what organic fertilizers to use during the growing period. All harvesting is done manually. Jamaica is also the last country to use traditional wooden barrels for packaging and transporting coffee.

Only after passing a series of stringent standards set by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (C.I.B) can coffee receive the government-awarded certificate and officially bear the name "Blue Mountain."
