In 2001, Japan's UCC Ueshima Coffee Company invented drip bag coffee and registered a patent before launching it to the market. In Japanese, it's called "one-cup extraction type coffee." This is because its principle involves putting coffee grounds in a filter bag made of non-woven fabric or filter paper, with two paper clips on the outside. When opened, it can hang on the rim of a narrow-mouthed cup, and after brewing, you can simply remove it to enjoy aromatic black coffee. What is Drip Bag Coffee?
Drip bag coffee consists of coffee grounds sealed in filter bags. It's called drip bag coffee because during the brewing process, you need to open the small paper pieces (little ears) on both sides of the filter bag and hang them on a cup for extraction. Due to its main feature of being extremely convenient for getting a cup of black coffee, it has become an essential choice for many offices, homes, and travel situations.
Since drip bags emphasize convenience, although they can be brewed using complex brewing and grinding tools like pour-over coffee, this would mask the inherent convenience advantage of drip bags. Moreover, friends who purchase drip bag coffee love the taste of pour-over coffee. During office hours, at home, or while traveling, when lacking equipment like grinders, electronic scales, pour-over kettles, and filter cups, drip bag coffee can satisfy that coffee craving.
How to Brew Drip Bag Coffee?
1. First, drip bag coffee has a fixed net weight of coffee grounds (usually 10 grams), so it solves the problem of not having a grinder and electronic scale.
2. Next, let's address the water amount and temperature. Like pour-over coffee, use a ratio of 1:15 to 1:16, so the brewed coffee should reach 140-150 milliliters. Choose a water temperature of around 90°C. If you have a thermometer or temperature-controlled kettle, use that preferentially. If not, you can estimate the temperature—generally, after boiling water in a kettle, turn off the heat source and open the lid, wait 2-3 minutes, and the temperature will reach around 90°C (at room temperature 28°C).
3. Once prepared, preheat the mug (cup), take out the drip bag and tear open the sealed edge along the "Open" line, unfold the "ears" on both ends of the filter bag, hang them on the rim of the mug, and shake to level the coffee grounds.
4. For the first pour, simply wet the entire coffee grounds layer and let it bloom for 30 seconds.
5. After blooming, perform the second pour. Use a small water stream in circular motions to fill directly, and as the grounds layer slightly drops, continue pouring until full. Repeat this process until the coffee in the cup reaches about 140-150 milliliters, then remove the drip bag and enjoy!
6. If you want more precise water amount, you can pour 150-160 milliliters of water into the pouring kettle. During brewing, after injecting all the water from the kettle into the drip bag, you can remove the drip bag once all the coffee liquid has flowed into the cup. The entire brewing process takes about 1 minute.
Since drip bag coffee uses pre-ground coffee, its flavor dissipates faster than whole coffee beans. Therefore, to enjoy the coffee's flavor, it's best to consume it as soon as possible.
