Iced and Hot American Coffee Recipes and Tutorials - How Many Ways to Make Americano?
How to Properly Drink Americano Coffee | What Are the Differences Between Black Coffee: Americano, Long Black, and Lungo?
"Americano coffee" (English: Americano, Italian: Caffe Americano) is black coffee made using a drip coffee maker. Because the general extraction time is relatively long (about four to five minutes), the caffeine content is higher. Americano coffee is simple to make, emphasizing convenience and freedom. Compared to espresso coffee, Americano coffee tastes relatively cleaner and better preserves the original flavor of coffee beans.
Espresso with Hot Water Added - Americano Coffee:
Americano coffee, which can be found everywhere in convenience stores, is actually made by adding hot water to dilute espresso coffee. Americano coffee originated during World War II when American soldiers in Italy found Espresso too strong, so they added large amounts of hot water to dilute the taste. This way of drinking was then called "Americano coffee"; however, some Europeans do not agree with this method. The French even call Americano coffee "jus de chaussette," which means "sock juice."
Flavor Characteristics:
Many chain coffee shops' Americano extraction yields a mainly bitter taste. Such black coffee has higher purity, but usually leaves people drinking it with a pained expression. If you want to refresh your mind while experiencing the original flavor of coffee beans, FrontStreet Coffee believes Americano coffee is an excellent choice.
Brewing Method:
Having an Americano coffee machine will make making Americano coffee simpler than you imagine: add 1 scale of water - add 1 level spoon of coffee powder - start - in about two minutes, a fragrant Americano coffee is ready.
Several Ways to Make Americano Coffee:
Americano, Long Black & Lungo
This brings us to its two other siblings. Americano is made by adding hot water to Espresso; while Long Black is the opposite - adding Espresso to hot water. The different order results in slightly different flavors. It's more popular in Australia and New Zealand, and now becoming popular in London, UK.
What about Lungo? It's quite special - it's obtained by changing the grinder setting to speed up the flow rate that would normally extract espresso. In terms of volume, Americano holds more volume than Long Black (250ml vs 150ml), while Lungo has the least, about only 60ml. Usually Lungo is ground coarser to speed up extraction and shorten time. The coffee extracted from Lungo has the richest crema among the three.
[Ristretto] is the opposite of [Lungo]. It's an Espresso made with half the normal coffee-to-water ratio, with the only difference being the grind level of the coffee powder.
Because coffee extraction starts concentrated and then becomes weaker, Ristretto has a stronger flavor than Espresso per unit time.
Drip Coffee Maker
Having a drip coffee machine will make making Americano coffee simpler than you imagine: add 1 scale of water - pour in 1 level spoon of coffee powder - start - in about two minutes, a fragrant Americano coffee is ready.
Benefits of Drinking Americano Coffee:
Near-neutral coffee, its popularity is basically consistent between male and female customers. This is not only because of Americano coffee's approachable taste. As pure coffee, its coffee concentration (which most consumers can simply understand as bitterness) suits public taste, while preserving the unique deep-roasted aroma and bitter-sweet taste of espresso, making it refreshing and comfortable. Having an Americano after a heavy meal can serve as a palate cleanser.
On the other hand, and also very importantly, Americano coffee offers extremely high value for money. Usually Americano coffee comes in larger quantities, while the price is only slightly higher than espresso, or about the same price as a cappuccino.
FrontStreet Coffee's Americano Brewing Method:
The Americano coffee served at FrontStreet Coffee stores uses house-roasted FrontStreet Coffee Sunflower Warm Blend coffee beans. Under ideal extraction, it should have flavors of wine, vanilla, cream, chocolate, and berries.
To highlight these aromas, FrontStreet Coffee after multiple comparisons finally determined a 1:4.5 ratio, meaning adding 180g of hot water to 40g of espresso concentrate. This produces an Americano with moderate concentration, sweet and sour refreshment.
Double dose uses 20 grams, time controlled between 28-33 seconds. Prepare a 250ml ceramic cup, fill with 80°C hot water to 8/10 full, finally pour the espresso in to complete.
Iced Americano:
Place 3 large ice cubes in the cup, then add direct drinking water to 9/10 full; another method is to fill the cup with ice cubes, add espresso, and as the ice cubes melt, the espresso flavor becomes lighter, making it much more refreshing.
