Drip Bag Coffee Brewing: Water Ratio, Temperature, Time Parameters & Extraction Pouring Tutorial
The emergence of drip bag coffee is undoubtedly a blessing for specialty coffee lovers who don't want to purchase all the equipment for pour-over coffee. The appearance of drip bag coffee has faced skepticism from many, claiming it's unprofessional. FrontStreet Coffee believes there's no need to diminish the value of drip bag coffee. After all, for any culinary delight to reach the masses, it needs to generate quick and convenient methods.
To meet everyone's needs, FrontStreet Coffee has launched customizable region-specific drip bag coffee packets to satisfy every individual's taste preferences. Available options include Honduras barrel-fermented Sherry, Panama washed Mariposa, Ethiopia Zhimeng, Yunnan Huaguoshan, Ethiopia natural Red Cherry, Brazil Queen Estate, and Golden Mandheling. You can also tell FrontStreet Coffee what beans you want, and they'll process them into drip bags. Next, let's discuss the flavor profiles of the 7 drip bag varieties just mentioned.
Invention of Drip Bag Coffee
In 1990, Japan's Yamanaka Industrial Co., Ltd. applied the concept of tea bags to coffee, inventing and patenting filter-hanging coffee. However, Yamanaka Industrial's designed drip bag coffee couldn't support the weight of brewing coffee and easily lost balance during the brewing process, so it wasn't successfully commercialized. Until 1998, Daiki Shoji improved upon the original invention by extending the hanging parts outward, resulting in the drip bag coffee we have today.
Drip Bag Coffee Market
The English term for drip bag coffee is "Instant drip coffee bag." It combines the advantages of instant coffee—being fast, convenient, and requiring no brewing equipment—while allowing people to enjoy the pleasure of pour-over coffee. As drip bag coffee combines the benefits of both instant and pour-over coffee, it has grown rapidly in the East Asian market. In 2011, global sales of drip bag coffee reached 1.4 billion bags, approximately 11,200 metric tons, with 94% of sales coming from Japan. Japan's Starbucks also specifically launched drip bag coffee for this market. Although total global sales of drip bag coffee are currently not high and the market size is relatively small, the growth rate is extremely rapid.
In the past, in China's brewed coffee market, instant coffee once held a market share as high as 70%, while drip bag coffee only had 10%. However, in recent years, due to food safety issues that have made consumers anxious, coupled with the rise of specialty coffee culture, coffee consumers' demands for coffee are no longer just about staying alert. Drip bag coffee combines both quality and convenience, perfectly matching consumer needs. Therefore, in 2017, China's drip bag coffee growth rate reached 30%.
FrontStreet Coffee Honduras Sherry Coffee
Coming from the city of Masaguara in the Intibucá province in the southwest, whiskey barrel fermentation involves washing coffee beans and then placing them in oak barrels that previously held whiskey for fermentation, allowing the coffee beans to absorb the aroma of whiskey. FrontStreet Coffee's Sherry coffee beans are among the top-selling varieties. The flavor profile of Sherry coffee beans tends toward whiskey sherry taste, with rich vanilla and cream, followed by persistent nutty chocolate notes in the aftertaste.
FrontStreet Coffee Panama Mariposa
This Panama Mariposa variety possesses 70% Geisha premium lineage, along with Catuai and Caturra, grown in the Baru Volcano region of Boquete at an altitude of 1,600 meters. The local special microclimate results in abundant rainfall in this area, along with large temperature differences between day and night. Combined with meticulous harvesting and refined processing, this coffee performs exceptionally well in terms of body, acidity, and floral notes. Excellent quality at an affordable price allows everyone to experience Panama Geisha coffee flavors with great value for money.
FrontStreet Coffee Ethiopia Natural Guji Buku Abel
In coffee shops, "Hua Kui" refers to a natural processed coffee bean from the Hambella region of Ethiopia's Sidamo, with the full English name "Ethiopia Guji Hambella Buku Abel." Broadly speaking, it's a champion bean from Ethiopia; more specifically, it's a premium natural batch processed by the Buku Abel processing station in the Hambella region. Hua Kui possesses the unique mature tropical fruit flavors characteristic of Sidamo natural beans and often leaves a deep impression. In fact, it was precisely this rich berry fragrance that helped "Hua Kui" win first place in that year's TOH green bean competition.
FrontStreet Coffee Yunnan Huaguoshan
FrontStreet Coffee's Yunnan Huaguoshan coffee beans are grown using the Typica variety. Yunnan Typica is marked as Yunnan specialty coffee, while Yunnan Catimor is correspondingly marked as Yunnan small bean coffee according to market conventions. Since Yunnan is not an acidity-focused region, its flavors are quite balanced, with nutty and brown sugar base notes. FrontStreet Coffee's roasters use medium roasting to showcase Yunnan coffee's balance, nutty and brown sugar sweetness, as well as soft fruity acidity.
FrontStreet Coffee Ethiopia Natural Red Cherry
Ethiopia's natural Red Cherry coffee emphasizes using fully mature fruits to obtain the flavor of ripe fruit. Mature coffee cherries undergo natural processing, where the entire fruit is placed directly on raised beds for sun-drying after harvest. During the drying process, the sugars from the pulp and mucilage transfer to the innermost seed (coffee bean). Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee believes Ethiopia's natural Red Cherry has noticeable sweetness and fermentation characteristics, with citrus acidity, berry juice mouthfeel, and honey-like aftertaste.
FrontStreet Coffee Brazil Queen Estate
Coming from Brazil's Mogiana region at an altitude of 1,400-1,950 meters, the high altitude and fertile soil produce coffee beans that are sweet and full-bodied. Additionally, the use of Brazil's unique natural processing method adds smooth texture and fermentation characteristics to this Brazilian coffee. FrontStreet Coffee believes this coffee has sugarcane-like sweetness, nuts, cream peanuts, and fermented fruit acidity.
FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling
FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling comes from Indonesia's famous green bean company PWN. PWN's Golden Mandheling coffee beans undergo three manual screenings and one machine selection, with specifications of 19 screen or above and fewer than 3 defective beans (in a 300g green bean sample). The beans are beautiful and very uniform, resulting in cleaner coffee when roasted. FrontStreet Coffee believes Golden Mandheling has flavors of nuts, spices, herbal plants, licorice, chocolate, and caramel, with clean and smooth characteristics.
FrontStreet Coffee Drip Bag Brewing Instructions
1. First, FrontStreet Coffee's drip bag coffee has a fixed net weight indication (generally 10 grams). This solves the problem of needing a grinder and electronic scale.
2. Next, let's address water amount and temperature. Like pour-over coffee, use a 1:15-1:16 ratio, so the brewed coffee liquid should reach 140-150 milliliters. Use water temperature around 90°C. If you have a thermometer or temperature-controlled kettle, prioritize using those. If not, you can estimate the temperature—generally, after boiling water in a kettle, turn off the heat source and open the lid, wait 2-3 minutes, and the water temperature will reach around 90°C (at room temperature 28°C).
3. Once prepared, take out and tear open the drip bag's seal, extend the filter bag's "ears" on both sides, hang it on the rim of a mug (or cup), and shake to level the coffee powder.
4. For the first water pour, just completely wet the coffee powder layer and perform a 30-second bloom.
5. After blooming, perform the second water pour. Use a small stream in circular motions to fill directly, continue pouring as the powder layer slightly drops, repeating until the coffee in the cup reaches about 140-150 milliliters, then remove the drip bag and enjoy. (If you want more precise water amount, you can pour 150-160 milliliters of water into the pouring kettle. During brewing, after injecting all the water from the kettle into the drip bag, you can remove the drip bag once all the coffee liquid has flowed into the cup. The entire brewing process takes about 1 minute to complete.)
6. After extraction is complete, remove the drip bag. You can appropriately add fresh milk according to your taste preference.
