Why Can't Drip Bag Coffee Be Brewed a Second Time? How Many Steps Are There in Premium Drip Bag Coffee Extraction?
Drip coffee bags are made by grinding coffee beans and sealing them in filter bags. They're called "drip coffee bags" because during brewing, you need to unfold the small paper tabs (little "ears") on both sides of the filter bag and hang them on a cup for extraction. Due to their main characteristic of extreme convenience for making a cup of black coffee, they have become an essential choice for many offices, homes, and travels.
Although drip bags emphasize convenience, while they can also be brewed using "cumbersome" brewing and grinding tools like pour-over coffee, doing so would diminish the inherent convenience advantage of drip bags. Additionally, customers who purchase drip coffee bags love the taste of pour-over coffee. When they're in the office, at home, or traveling and lack equipment like grinders, scales, pour-over kettles, or drippers, drip coffee bags can satisfy their coffee cravings.
Drip Coffee Bag Brewing Method
Taking FrontStreet Coffee's own drip coffee bags as an example, with 10g of coffee grounds:
1. Tear open the packaging along the arrow direction on the bag, unfold the small tabs on both sides of the filter paper and hang them on the cup. FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags have opening indicators and are very easy to tear.
2. Choose a cup with a smaller mouth if possible, otherwise the two ears of the drip coffee bag might not hang properly. FrontStreet Coffee uses cups with a mouth diameter of approximately 8-9cm.
3. FrontStreet Coffee's brewing technique is the same as pour-over single-origin coffee. Pour 90°C hot water, just enough to cover the coffee grounds. If you want to be precise, you can measure 20g of water and let it bloom for 30 seconds.
4. After blooming, pour about 130ml of hot water in stages. If you prefer stronger coffee, use less water; if you prefer milder coffee, use more water.
5. Once brewing is complete, simply lift out the drip bag and dispose of it in the trash.
Can Drip Coffee Bags Be Reused?
Since a small drip bag can only brew such a small amount of coffee, can it be reused multiple times like tea?
Actually, only 30% of coffee is soluble, while 70% consists of insoluble fiber. When 10g of coffee is brewed once using FrontStreet Coffee's recommended method, it extracts 18-22% of the coffee's soluble substances. This extraction rate is also considered optimal for flavor compounds according to research by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Therefore, the remaining 8-12% of soluble substances are compounds with poor flavor that would affect the overall taste of the coffee.
If you observe carefully, you'll notice that the coffee liquid extracted in the early stages is very dark in color, becoming progressively lighter toward the end. By the final stage, it's just a pale yellow. In reality, there's very little flavor left at the end - it's basically watery.

FrontStreet Coffee Yunnan Xiao Li Drip Coffee
At FrontStreet Coffee, you can find two types of Yunnan coffee beans: one is washed Typica, and the other is Catimor. At FrontStreet Coffee, Yunnan Typica is labeled as Yunnan specialty coffee, while Yunnan Catimor is labeled as Yunnan Xiao Li coffee according to market customs.
FrontStreet Coffee roasts both Yunnan coffee beans to medium roast because the Yunnan region is not known for acidity - their flavors are quite balanced, with nutty and brown sugar notes as the base. FrontStreet Coffee chooses medium roast to showcase the balance, nutty and brown sugar sweetness, and gentle fruity acidity of FrontStreet Coffee's Yunnan coffee.
When discussing Yunnan coffee beans, there are often two phrases that can end discussions about varieties: one is "thanks to the efforts of coffee farmers and improvements in technical levels, today's Yunnan coffee beans are quite good," and the other is "Yunnan beans are quite good." These two phrases have become classic sayings for commenting on Yunnan coffee. Yunnan Xiao Li was originally named after Typica because Typica is the Arabica small-bean variety, but times have changed. Due to variety degradation and low yield, Typica was replaced by Catimor, and the name Xiao Li coffee was inherited by Catimor.
