The Three Sources of Coffee Knowledge

Since entering the industry until now,

all the coffee knowledge I've learned

comes from no more than three sources:

First, what others directly taught me

Second, online materials and books

Third, what I taught myself

Learning from Others

First, this includes my teachers, employees, students, friends, competitors, judges, and even people I don't admire. Learning through such interactions, I often carry emotions because of liking or admiration, so I believe everything they say without using rational thinking to examine it. Conversely, because I don't admire or am not convinced, I doubt everything I hear and don't want to accept any reasonable arguments. Often, I need to reflect on these things afterward to absorb them.

Although this phenomenon isn't about saving face, it can still be problematic. Especially since my memory isn't good and I often can't recall the main points and arguments of the moment. In the end, all that might remain is my impression of whether I like this person or not. And often, this impression might be deliberately created by others or distorted by myself. It's completely unreliable. Now I'm gradually learning to carefully consider the reasons behind their arguments and the motivations for their behavior. Then, in front of people I completely trust, I regress to being a child, acting entirely on intuition, unless I'm forced to use my brain.

Learning from Materials

Second, reading materials and books - I used to be very good at this, but now I lack patience. An article often gets interrupted four or five times by other information. Unless I immediately recognize the value of the material, I'll put down my phone (yes, I need to print it out), take off my glasses (yes, I have presbyopia), and properly read and think. So such materials usually explain questions I've had in my mind for a long time, or propose new topics and concepts. I'll repeatedly examine the logic of the preface and conclusion, reference other literature, and even practice to verify.

Such things are incredibly interesting! Because I don't have to interact with people, I can talk to myself, rudely questioning repeatedly and cross-verifying. But the most unfortunate part is that I can't immediately get answers to further questions from the author - everything mostly relies on answering my own questions.

Self-Learning

Third, self-learning. For me, this is a process of asking and answering myself. I encounter problems, whether asked by others, things I can't figure out while reading, or when work throws a problem at me from the roaster or green beans. I often first formulate the problem properly. When the question is framed correctly, the answer is often easier to find and judge. I also often break down problems because small questions can lead to big discoveries, solving small questions one by one makes the answer to the big question not too far away. Then, I start simulating experiments in my mind, imagining the possible outcomes of each step. Finally comes the actual practice. This is a habit I developed as a student because experiments are expensive, so thinking through the logical structure and possible directions of answers in advance makes verification more efficient and saves money.

Answers from self-learning are often the most authentic, but also often completely wrong. Because I'm honest with myself, the results will be authentic. If I hide from myself, I'll deceive myself severely. It all depends on whether I have enough wisdom to face myself.

Current Approach

Now

I use all three methods

just with different preferences

and realistic conditions

limiting my choices

But honestly,

I don't like interacting with people

I love doing experiments most

But as a business owner

I don't have a choice

Everything must prioritize the company's survival

And then

being able to satisfy my own questions

that makes me very happy

Looking Forward to 2018!
