Introduction
Coffee was introduced to Panama in 1780, when Europeans brought the first Typica varieties. Since then, this mysterious and fascinating beverage has conquered the senses of Panamanians, and locals began to grow it widely. Panama coffee is very smooth, with full-bodied beans that are light in weight and have perfectly balanced acidity. Its high-quality coffee beans offer pure and distinctive flavors, and medium roasting is recommended. Many buyers like to use Panamanian beans for blends, and almost all high-quality coffee beans are exported to France and Finland.
Main coffee-producing regions in Panama:
- Boquete: This region produces abundant and high-quality coffee, making it the area with the highest production and best quality coffee in Panama.
- Volcan: Coffee from this area is characterized by mild and balanced flavors, gradually attracting attention from international connoisseurs and coffee enthusiasts. It is believed that it will soon rival the Boquete region.
- Santa Clara: Fertile coffee farms are irrigated and nourished by clear river water from the Chorerra waterfall. Combined with its proximity to the Panama Canal, fresh and pure Panama coffee can be conveniently transported worldwide.
- Piedra de Candela: This region is considered to have the greatest potential for developing high-quality specialty coffee.
Panama has been the hottest country in Central America for the past 5-6 years, mainly because of a coffee variety called Geisha grown by the Peterson family at Hacienda La Esmeralda, which has driven coffee enthusiasts wild. Geisha is therefore acclaimed as the world's top coffee bean. For this reason, the Panama Best of Panama auction is separate from the Central and South America Cupping Competition and was the earliest auction country, held annually in mid-May. Panama coffee is impressive not only in the Geisha variety but also in the continuous innovation of mid-stage green bean processing. In addition to traditional washed processing, there is also the honey processing method popular in neighboring Costa Rica, and Panama also produces small quantities of sun-dried beans that are gradually emerging in Central America, attracting global coffee attention.
Finca Santa Teresa, located in the Santa Clara production area on the border between Panama and Costa Rica, is operated by owner Juan Pablo Berard and his daughter Maria Luisia, who jointly manage this 100-hectare coffee farm. They preserve 25 hectares as original forest to serve as habitat for flora and fauna. Coffee varieties planted include Caturra, Catuai, and Geisha. This farm has won numerous awards and is also enthusiastic about education, joining the non-profit organization Casa Esperanza which provides two teachers. Juan Pablo built school facilities and provides books and meals, dedicated to local educational development. Although this farm has a small planting area, it is well-equipped with its own processing plant, sufficient to handle all work from berries to burlap sacks. Most employees are local residents from the border area and are well cared for by the farm owner.
This micro-batch that FrontStreet Coffee acquired from Panama Finca Santa Teresa (Washed Caturra/Catuai) offers unique flavors and has won countless awards in Panama's annual Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition over the years.

Pour Over Coffee Beginner's Guide: Professional Barista's Recommendations for Equipment Pairings
As a former Barista, I'm delighted to see more people discovering specialty coffee.
