Different coffee beans exhibit distinct characteristics based on their variety and origin, with subtle differences in acidity, bitterness, sweetness, aroma, and body. Single-origin coffee beans often emphasize the unique qualities specific to a particular type of coffee. Blended coffee, also known as mixed coffee, combines various single-origin beans to fully leverage the strengths of each component, complementing or enhancing flavors to create a richer, new taste profile.
People blend coffee beans from different origins for several reasons. The ideal goal is to create a coffee that tastes better than any individual component. However, single-origin Arabica coffee beans alone can produce excellent coffee with aromatic flavors, smooth mouthfeel, and sweet aftertaste.
Before blending any coffee, it's essential to understand the flavor characteristics of each variety and have a clear vision of the desired blend profile that cannot be achieved by any single-origin coffee. To practically apply these combinations, one must first understand the flavor profiles of dozens of single-origin coffees. Each coffee shop also creates its own unique blends with different proportions based on their specialty:
This blend uses "Asia + Central America" origins as the base, incorporating 20% Kenyan coffee to highlight its acidity. Roasted until the end of the first crack, it creates a distinctive "Seasonal Pour-Over Blend" with a smooth mouthfeel, excellent sweetness, while maintaining pleasant acidity.
