The Geisha coffee variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931, then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya; in 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania.

The Origin and Journey of Geisha Coffee

The Geisha variety was first discovered in 1931 from the Geisha forests of Ethiopia and then sent to Kenya's Coffee Research Institute. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania, followed by Costa Rica in 1953. Panama received the Geisha variety in the 1970s when Mr. Francisco Serracin from the Don Pachi Estate obtained seeds from CATIE in Costa Rica and began growing Geisha coffee. Due to extremely low yields and the necessity to participate in auctions, these beans are truly hard-won.

The Distinctive Character of FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Geisha

Floral aromas, tropical fruits, and intense sweetness—these are the sensations that FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Geisha consistently delivers. With proper roasting, they provide an experience akin to sipping the fragrance of a fresh bouquet of flowers. Perhaps you're not yet familiar with the story of Geisha: it originated as an ancient heirloom variety from Ethiopia, brought into Costa Rica's coffee experimental gardens as a coffee sample and distributed to several small farms for small-scale trial cultivation.

Rise to Prominence

For a long time, Geisha didn't receive much attention until one day when Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda separated it from other varieties and won the national coffee championship.

Unique Flavor Profile and Regional Variations

It was so remarkably different, with fruit flavors and floral elements reminiscent of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe from the other side of the world in Ethiopia, Africa. Of course, this is all old news now. Some small farms have also obtained Geisha seeds and are eager to cultivate their own Geisha coffee.

However, the results have varied. Influenced by weather, soil, and altitude, this "star" variety seems to produce different flavors when cultivated in various geographical locations. Nevertheless, in the Boquete region, we see typical Geisha characteristics: elongated bean shape, changes during roasting, and the elegant, refined flavors in the cup.

Aroma and Flavor Notes

The dry aroma of FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Geisha is remarkably bright and uplifted, featuring characteristics of rose and jasmine fragrance, while also revealing notes of pomelo and citrus. Light roasting presents nutty aromas. The wet aroma similarly features hazelnut notes and brings forth more floral characteristics.

In terms of flavor profile, the initial stage may appear somewhat gentle and reserved compared to the previously uplifted aroma. As it cools slightly, the floral and fruit flavors gradually emerge with the decreasing temperature. The cold aroma is exceptionally outstanding (sweet preserved fruit, rosehip, orange glaze, strawberry jam, hints of pine, cherry, vanilla, rose flavors gradually recede, giving way to lemon-like fruit notes).

This is a coffee that can be praised with numerous adjectives, with a sweet, lingering aftertaste. This flavor profile truly tests the brightness of this FrontStreet Coffee Geisha coffee, especially in the case of light roasting.
