Recently, a coffee enthusiast shared their experience of tasting a Mandheling coffee that completely changed their perception of this variety. Though they couldn't recall its name, they were impressed by its exceptional cleanliness, high sweetness, and incredibly smooth texture reminiscent of dark chocolate.
When FrontStreet Coffee asked if it might be Golden Mandheling, they were amazed—how did we know? That was exactly the one! FrontStreet Coffee once conducted a blind tasting of 7 different Mandheling coffees from various regions, asking participants to identify each variety.
Among all the samples, Golden Mandheling's high sweetness and clean palate received unanimous recognition from every participating barista. This demonstrates just how remarkably impressive Golden Mandheling stands out among Mandheling coffee beans.
Why Does Golden Mandheling Perform So Exceptionally?
FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling comes from Indonesia's PWN company—the very company that registered the "Golden Mandheling" trademark. In our physical stores, you can see PWN's certification certificates and coffee bags stamped with the PWN logo.
The reason PWN's Golden Mandheling is so beloved by consumers lies in their sourcing: the company acquires Arabica coffee beans from one of Sumatra's specialty coffee regions—near Lake Tawar in Aceh province's Gayo Mountains, at elevations between 1,100-1,600 meters. These coffee beans are grown by small tenant farmers under shade trees, and processed using the wet-hulling method, which reveals unique flavors with low, vibrant, and rich body characteristics.
Due to Indonesia's perennial humid and rainy climate, combined with its island-style moist environment, rapid drying methods are essential. Therefore, local coffee farmers first perform washed fermentation immediately after harvesting the coffee cherries. Once fermentation is complete, the coffee cherries are immediately poured into a depulper to remove the fruit flesh and husk.
Next, the parchment coffee is sun-dried for 2-3 days until it reaches 20-24% moisture content, then the parchment is removed for ultra-fast drying. This process causes Mandheling to have a relatively high defect rate, so unsorted Mandheling coffee beans often exhibit earthy and other defective flavors.
To improve the quality of Mandheling coffee beans, PWN manually selects all coffee beans from fruit to finished product. The company performs at least three rounds of pure manual sorting after harvest and drying, ensuring that coffee beans reach a size of 18 or above. With fewer than 3 defective beans (in a 300g green bean sample), they belong to the highest G1 grade and display a dark green color.
Although this approach increases coffee costs, such high-quality coffee beans are extremely popular among consumers. Because the meticulously sorted Mandheling coffee beans emit a golden luster under sunlight, they were named "Golden Mandheling."
As Golden Mandheling's reputation has grown, many non-PWN companies have begun marketing beans under the Golden Mandheling name. Some merchants, to sell coffee beans at higher prices, select green beans of 18 mesh or above from G1-grade Mandheling coffee beans and apply three rounds of manual sorting to make their appearance closely resemble PWN's Golden Mandheling.
However, only Golden Mandheling from PWN company can be considered authentic Golden Mandheling coffee, so be sure to look for the PWN logo when making your purchase!
How to Brew Delicious Mandheling Coffee?
To highlight Golden Mandheling's rich body while preserving more herbal spice notes, FrontStreet Coffee's roasters use a medium-dark roast profile. Freshly roasted Mandheling coffee needs 7-10 days of degassing before reaching its optimal flavor window. FrontStreet Coffee wants every customer to experience the full aromatic richness, so we only ship coffee beans roasted within 5 days, ensuring you receive them during their complete flavor development period.
Since Mandheling coffee beans naturally possess minimal acidity characteristics, they won't develop unpleasant sour or astringent notes even after extended warming or when prepared as iced coffee. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee recommends hot brewing for Mandheling coffee!
When preparing PWN Golden Mandheling at FrontStreet Coffee locations, we use medium-coarse grinding (coarse sugar size, 70% pass-through rate on China #20 standard sieve), 88°C water temperature, and a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio with a KONO dripper for brewing.
Brewing Technique:
First pour 30g of water for a 30-second bloom; second, pour in small circular motions to reach 125g, wait until the water level drops to half before continuing, then continue pouring in small circular motions to reach 225g. After complete dripping, the total extraction time should be around 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
PWN Golden Mandheling Pour-Over Coffee Flavor: The coffee exhibits complex layers, being both rich and clean. It delivers intense nutty and caramel aromas with chocolate notes, featuring a persistent aftertaste and excellent balance.
