The Origin and Terroir of Yirgacheffe
Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with three neighboring producing areas: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya. Because the coffee flavor produced by these areas runs parallel to FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe, Kochere is also classified within the Yirgacheffe region. In November 2009, Ethiopia implemented a new trading and grading system, establishing the Commodity Exchange (ECX), where coffee and other agricultural products are publicly auctioned through this official institution. Besides Yirgacheffe, three additional sub-producing areas were added: Wenago, Kochere, and Genlena Abaya, indicating that these three regions have extremely delicate flavors that can be further subdivided. Since the ECX system was implemented in 2008, most coffee beans have been sold through this auction system, but cooperatives are not under this jurisdiction - they can directly negotiate, price, and export with buyers.
The Adado Cooperative
The Adado Cooperative is one of 26 unions of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU). YCFCU now represents over 50,000 coffee farmers from more than 300,000 family representatives. Established in June 2002, all 26 unions are located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, a very famous and important coffee producing area in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia: The Coffee Eden
Ethiopia is known as the coffee Eden because it is the homeland of native coffee varieties and a genetic treasure trove for coffee cultivators. It has five major specialty coffee producing regions: Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Harar, Limu, and Gimbi. Among these, Yirgacheffe is the highest-altitude coffee producing region in Ethiopia, situated by mountains and waters. The coffee beans produced here have unique flavors, called by enthusiasts the "Yirgacheffe taste" - meaning rich jasmine floral aroma, sweet citrus fragrance, pleasant lemon acidity, and almond sweetness.
The Adado Cooperative comes from the Gedeo Zone of Yirgacheffe and is one of the founding cooperatives of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), as well as an important base for the Fair Trade Association in Ethiopia. Adado is located in the lush mountainous area at altitudes between 2000 and 2400 meters, where 1250 farmers work together in coffee cultivation. They use traditional farming methods, interplanting native coffee with enset (false banana), where the enset provides shade for coffee trees and fertilizes all the soil, adding unique flavors to the coffee. This batch of FrontStreet Coffee's washed Yirgacheffe Adado processing plant G1 is rated as G1, the highest grade by ECX.
