Understanding Robusta Coffee

Robusta coffee, also known as large-leaf species, is a tree species that falls between shrubs and tall trees. Its leaves are longer and bright green, and the tree can grow up to 10 meters tall, though its roots are quite shallow.

Robusta cherries are slightly rounder and smaller than Arabica cherries, while the coffee beans are flat and round with a straight, I-shaped crease in the middle. (In contrast, Arabica coffee beans are semi-elliptical with an S-shaped crease.)

Characteristics and Flavor Profile

Compared to Arabica coffee beans, Robusta's advantages include its fast growth rate, strong disease and pest resistance, ability to adapt to lower altitudes and higher temperatures, and excellent tolerance. However, its disadvantage is that it has a distinct and intense flavor. Some Robusta coffee beans grown at low altitudes, of poor quality, or sold commercially typically have obvious earthy and rubbery flavors, with a strong bitter taste that is difficult to drink straight.

However, there are also some excellent specialty Robusta coffee beans, usually grown in regions around 1200m altitude that receive meticulous care, harvesting, and processing. As a result, their flavors can display pleasant notes like walnut, peanut, hazelnut, and wheat grains.

Using Robusta in Coffee Blends

Despite this, Robusta coffee beans have such an intense flavor that drinking them straight can be eye-wateringly strong. However, if small amounts are added to Arabica coffee beans for blending, it can further enhance the coffee's body and richness without allowing too many of Robusta's negative flavors to come through.

How to Brew Robusta Coffee Powder

Generally, Robusta coffee powder sold on the market is of average quality. If you drink it straight, it might be very bitter. In this article, FrontStreet Coffee will teach you how to use Robusta to make Vietnamese coffee.

First, we need to prepare a Vietnamese drip filter (available online and very affordable~). Then, take the filter's press plate, add the coffee powder, spread it evenly, and install the press plate.

Next, pour an appropriate amount of condensed milk into a heat-resistant glass.

Finally, pour hot water for blooming, wetting the coffee powder. Wait 20 seconds, then add hot water at a 1:10 ratio and wait for the drip filtration to complete.
