What is the Panama Coffee Auction?
In 1996, during the lowest period of international coffee prices, seven coffee estates in the Boquete and Volcan regions saw the dawn of the specialty coffee era. They organized and formed the famous Special Coffees of Panama Association (SCAP). In 2013, the highest bid for washed Geisha in the BOP (Best of Panama) exceeded $160 per pound, while the highest bid for natural Geisha was claimed by Hacienda La Esmeralda at over $350 per pound.

Brewing Instructions
Hand-brewed Blue Label: 15g of coffee, ground to medium-fine consistency (using Fuji Fuji ghost tooth burr grinder at setting 3.5), V60 dripper, water temperature 91-93°C. First pour 30g of water and let bloom for 27 seconds. Continue pouring to 105g, then pause. Wait until the water level in the coffee bed drops to half, then continue pouring slowly until reaching 225g. Avoid the tail section. Water-to-coffee ratio 1:15, extraction time 2:00.

The Geisha Story
Panama · Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Coffee Beans
The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania, and in 1953, Costa Rica imported it. For a long time, Geisha didn't receive much attention until one day, Don Pachi first brought it from the small town of GESHA in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica. Afterward, Geisha traveled along southern routes into Panama. Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama separated it from other varieties and won the national coffee competition championship.
Flavor Description
Oolong tea fragrance, peach aroma, and honey sweetness create a refreshing and comfortable experience, bright yet balanced. The aroma has extremely rich layers, with the entire fragrance wrapped in caramel sweetness. Upon tasting, the tongue perceives distinct fruit acidity, which becomes gentle and rounded in the mouth. The fruit sweetness and aftertaste are intense, like drinking a cup of fresh fruit tea that refreshes the heart and soul. The lower the temperature, the more delicate the acidity. The flavor characteristics are quite persistent, leaving one feeling completely satisfied!
The Geisha Legacy
Geisha is pronounced the same as the Japanese word "geisha" (artiste), hence it's also known as Geisha coffee. Because the tree variety grows taller than typical coffee trees, it was originally planted in a small area within the estate and used as a windbreak. The estate owner's son, seeking to participate in the annual Best of Panama competition, tested all coffee varieties throughout the estate, giving Geisha its opportunity to shine. Since then, it has participated in various world coffee competitions, winning a total of eleven championships.
Geisha possesses full sweetness, an extremely clean cup profile, and rich aromas that extend from berries and citrus to mango, papaya, and peach flavors. A very distinct bergamot-like aftertaste is also one of its typical cupping characteristics. To this day, Geisha remains the champion among coffee varieties.
