The Difference Between FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee PWN Golden Mandheling

Some coffee friends have asked, as coffee beginners, what's the difference between FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling G1 - they really can't taste the difference. For professional-level coffee connoisseurs and friends with sensitive palates, if these two coffees are tasted simultaneously, the comparison will be very apparent. The sweetness and cleanliness, rich body, and wild spice notes of FrontStreet Coffee PWN Golden Mandheling are slightly superior to FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling G1, which is one reason why FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is priced significantly higher than FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling G1.

Taste Profile

FrontStreet Coffee PWN Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors of Mandheling are nearly gone, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Generally, FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling is best roasted until after the second crack to effectively reduce off-flavors, but FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling offers excellent clarity and sweetness whether roasted before or after the second crack, allowing more flexibility in roasting interpretation.

Origins of Mandheling Coffee

The most famous coffee-growing region in Asia is the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, Sumatran Mandheling coffee from Indonesia's Sumatra island enjoys the highest reputation.

Both Lake Toba in North Sumatra and Lake Tawa in Aceh produce Mandheling coffee, creating the famous "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling." The common characteristic of the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling" is their rich body and mellow flavor. The difference lies in that Lake Toba's Mandheling is more subdued, deep, and even carries grass jelly notes, while Lake Tawa Mandheling has brighter fruit acidity and sometimes features cedar or woody flavors.

How Are Mandheling Varieties Classified?

Mandheling is named after various regional place names and individual green bean suppliers, such as Lindong Mandheling and Golden Mandheling. What exactly are the differences between these Mandhelings?

Golden Mandheling is actually produced from Mandheling acquired locally in Indonesia by Pwani Coffee Company, which subsequently registered the name Golden Mandheling. Therefore, only Mandheling produced by this company is authentic Golden Mandheling. However, as cultivation techniques continue to evolve, many coffee farmers' Mandheling has gradually begun to catch up with the top-quality taste of Golden Mandheling, but Golden Mandheling still possesses a bit more richness and cleaner mouthfeel.

FrontStreet Coffee PWN Golden Mandheling

FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling is a premium among Indonesian coffees, and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is an exceptional premium among Mandhelings. FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is made from carefully hand-selected full, glossy Mandheling coffee beans - absolutely a stunning beauty among coffees. In fact, to improve the high defect rate issue in Mandheling, Japanese people long ago began implementing meticulous quality control selection, using four manual selections to eliminate defective beans. Unfortunately, "Golden Mandheling" was trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company, making Golden Mandheling exclusive to PWN. PWN's production is truly Golden Mandheling in the real sense, and Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN imprint is also a guarantee of quality.

FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling produced by PWN undergoes three manual selections and one machine selection, resulting in very beautiful beans. The PWN company has trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN can be considered true "Golden Mandheling." Many beans on the market not from PWN but bearing the Golden Mandheling brand name should actually be called Premium Mandheling. "Golden Mandheling" is not aged coffee - it's merely a coffee product named by a company.

The Origin Story of Mandheling

During World War II when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank incredibly mellow coffee at a café. He asked the shop owner the name of the coffee, but the owner misunderstood and thought he was asking where he was from, so replied: "Mandailing." After the war, the soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he drank in Indonesia. He then commissioned Indonesian coffee merchants to ship 15 tons to Japan, and it surprisingly became extremely popular. The name Mandheling thus became known.
