The Difference Between FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling

Some coffee friends have asked, as coffee beginners, what's the difference between FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling G1, as they can't really taste the difference. For professional-level coffee enthusiasts and taste-sensitive coffee friends, if these two coffees are tasted simultaneously, the contrast will be very obvious. The sweetness and cleanliness of Golden Mandheling, along with its rich body and wild spice notes, are superior to G1, which is one reason why Golden Mandheling is significantly more expensive than G1.

Flavor Profile

FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors of Mandheling are almost gone, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Generally, FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling is best roasted until after second crack to effectively reduce off-flavors, but FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling can be dropped either before or after second crack while maintaining excellent clarity and sweetness. This allows for wider roasting interpretation space, making it the perfect choice for coffee lovers who are passionate about original coffee flavors.

FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling

FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling is a premium coffee among Indonesian coffees, and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is the finest premium among Mandhelings. FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is carefully hand-selected to obtain full, glossy FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling coffee beans, truly an outstanding beauty among coffees. In fact, to improve the high defect rate problem in Mandheling, Japanese people started adopting meticulous quality control long ago, using four rounds of manual selection to remove defective beans. Unfortunately, "Golden Mandheling" was trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company, making Golden Mandheling exclusive to PWN. PWN's is the true FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling in the real sense, and Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN brand is also a guarantee of quality. PWN's yellow Mandheling undergoes three rounds of manual sorting and one machine sorting, resulting in beautiful beans. PWN Company trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered genuine "Golden Mandheling." Many Golden Mandheling beans on the market not produced by PWN Company should actually be called Premium Mandheling. "Golden Mandheling" is not some aged coffee bean - it's simply a product name created by the company.

The Origin of Mandheling Coffee

The most famous coffee origins in Asia are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, Sumatran FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling from Indonesia's Sumatra Island enjoys the highest reputation.

Both Lake Toba in North Sumatra and Lake Tawa in Aceh produce Mandheling coffee, which is famously known as the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling." The common characteristic of the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling" is that both are thick and mellow. The difference is that Lake Toba's Mandheling is more subdued, deep, and even has a grass jelly flavor, while Lake Tawa Mandheling has brighter fruit acidity and sometimes carries a fir or woody flavor.

During World War II when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank an incredibly mellow coffee at a café. He asked the shop owner the name of the coffee, but the owner misunderstood and thought he was asking where he was from, so he replied: Mandailing. After the war, the Japanese soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he drank in Indonesia. He then commissioned an Indonesian coffee merchant to ship 15 tons to Japan, and it became surprisingly popular. The name Mandheling was thus spread.
