Kochere: The Gem of Yirgacheffe
Kochere is located 25 kilometers southeast of Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia, representing a small but prosperous coffee-producing region. It stands as one of the three renowned micro-regions of Yirgacheffe. With a local population of approximately 100,000 people, coffee beans serve as the primary source of income. The processing and manufacturing equipment in this region is exceptionally advanced. The renowned coffee review website Coffee Review has awarded the Kochere washed beans an impressive score of 94 points.
Ethiopia's Eight Major Coffee Regions
Ethiopia boasts eight primary coffee-producing regions: Nekempte (Lekempti), Gimbi, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Among these, the most renowned specialty coffee regions include Nekempte (Lekempti), Limu, Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is situated within the Sidama administrative region of Ethiopia, indicating that Yirgacheffe represents a smaller sub-region within the broader Sidama area.
The Essence of Yirgacheffe
Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with approximately 20,000 residents. The three neighboring micro-regions—Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya—produce coffee with flavor profiles virtually identical to Yirgacheffe, which has led to their classification within the Yirgacheffe region. While Yirgacheffe shares cultural and geographical similarities with its neighbor Sidamo, it appears to be particularly blessed with exceptional natural advantages. Premium Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by floral aromas, bright citrus fruit acidity, lemon-like notes, and a silky, smooth mouthfeel.
Kochere: Excellence in Coffee Production
Kochere is situated in southwestern Ethiopia, approximately 25 miles north of the famous Yirgacheffe town. The production model primarily involves local small-scale farmers delivering their harvest batches to cooperatives for unified processing. The local Chalalacktu village has about 100,000 residents who depend on coffee cultivation for their livelihood, with related production activities serving as their primary economic source. The income generated from coffee production has enabled the local population to enjoy a significantly higher standard of living compared to many Ethiopian villages, featuring comprehensive health facilities, higher education institutions, and other infrastructure. Advanced processing equipment has consistently enabled Kochere region's coffee to achieve high standards in washed processing, delivering clean, sweet flavors with complex notes of molasses and citrus.
Flavor Profile
Jasmine floral notes, lemon, bergamot, honey, and black tea.
