FrontStreet Coffee: Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Blue Label Washed Premium Coffee Beans Flavor, Taste, and Aroma Description
Flavor Notes: Oolong tea fragrance, peach aroma, and honey notes, refreshing and comfortable, bright yet balanced, with exceptional aromatic complexity. The whole aroma is wrapped in caramel sweetness. On the first sip, the tongue meets a distinct fruit acidity that softens and rounds out in the mouth. The fruit sweetness and finish are intense, like sipping a fresh fruit tea, crisp and refreshing. The cooler it gets, the more delicate the acidity becomes. The character is remarkably persistent, leaving you thoroughly satisfied.

Geisha is pronounced the same as the Japanese word for geisha, which is why it is sometimes called "Geisha Coffee." Because the tree grows taller than typical coffee trees, it was originally planted in only a small area of the estate and used as a windbreak. When the estate owner's son searched the property for the best varieties to enter in the annual Best of Panama competition, he recognized Geisha's potential. Since then it has competed around the world, taking a total of eleven championships.
The Geisha variety was found in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and later sent to the Kenyan Coffee Research Institute. In 1936 it reached Uganda and Tanzania, and in 1953 it was introduced to Costa Rica. For a long time Geisha drew little attention, until Don Pachi carried it from the small town of Gesha in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica. It then traveled the southern route to Panama, where Hacienda La Esmeralda separated it from the other varieties and it went on to win the national coffee championship.
Geisha offers full-bodied sweetness, an exceptionally clean mouthfeel, and rich aromas that range from berries and citrus to mango, papaya, and peach. A very distinct bergamot-like aftertaste is another of its typical cupping traits. To this day, Geisha remains the champion among coffee varieties.
Panama: A Crucial Hub on the World Coffee Map
Panama is one of the most important regions on the world coffee map. Each year, auction lots from this region fetch prices of several hundred dollars per pound.
What Are the Panama Auctions?
In 1996, during the lowest period of international coffee prices, seven estates in the Boquete and Volcan regions caught sight of the specialty coffee era and banded together to form the famous Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP). In 2013, the top bid for washed Geisha at the Best of Panama (BOP) auction exceeded $160 per pound, while the top bid for natural Geisha went to a natural Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda at over $350 per pound.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation
Geisha is a low-yielding, delicate variety with demanding cultivation requirements, which keeps its price high, so it helps to know the different grades before buying. Hacienda La Esmeralda divides its Geisha into two main tiers. FrontStreet's Esmeralda Red Label Geisha is sold under the name "Esmeralda Special," grown between 1,600 and 1,800 meters; each lot must cup above 90 points, carries its own lot number, and comes from a single small plot, such as the Jaramillo plot. FrontStreet's Esmeralda Green Label, originally "Private Collection," blends lots from several plots and highlights the estate's signature high-altitude Geisha character at a more accessible price.
For a first taste of the famous Geisha profile, FrontStreet often points newcomers to its Boquete Geisha, an entry-level Panama Geisha that offers classic orange-blossom honey sweetness, an oolong tea-like body, and delicate, layered fruit acidity. If you want to explore Ethiopia's own Geisha heritage instead, FrontStreet's Grana Geisha from the Genlana Gesha farm is a single-variety estate lot dried on raised beds for 14 to 20 days and lightly roasted to show bright citrus acidity, ginger lily, and ripe fruit sweetness.
