I really can't taste the difference." For professional-level coffee connoisseurs and flavor-sensitive coffee lovers, when tasting these two coffees side by side, the comparison results will be very clearly apparent.

The Difference Between FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling and Golden Mandheling

Some coffee enthusiasts who are beginners ask about the difference between FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling G1, as they can't really tell the difference. For professional-level coffee connoisseurs and friends with sensitive palates, when drinking these two coffees simultaneously, the comparison will be very obvious. The Golden Mandheling's sweetness and clarity, along with its rich, wild spice notes, are superior to G1, which is one reason why Golden Mandheling is significantly more expensive than G1.

Flavor Profile

FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than FrontStreet Coffee's Lindong Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors typical of Mandheling are almost gone, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Generally, FrontStreet Coffee's Lindong Mandheling is best roasted until after the second crack to effectively reduce off-flavors, but FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling has excellent clarity and sweetness whether roasted before or after the second crack, offering more flexibility in roasting interpretation.

FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling

FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling is a premium coffee from Indonesia, and FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is an exceptional premium among Mandheling coffees. FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is carefully hand-selected to obtain full, glossy FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling coffee beans, truly an outstanding beauty among coffees. In fact, to improve the problem of high defect rates in Mandheling beans, the Japanese began implementing meticulous quality control long ago, using four rounds of manual selection to eliminate defective beans. Unfortunately, "Golden Mandheling" was trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company, making Golden Mandheling exclusive to PWN. PWN's is the true FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling, and Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN mark is also a guarantee of quality. PWN's Golden Mandheling undergoes three rounds of manual screening and one machine selection, resulting in beautiful beans. PWN Company trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered true "Golden Mandheling." Many beans on the market that are not from PWN Company but labeled with the Golden Mandheling brand should actually be called Premium Mandheling. "Golden Mandheling" is not aged coffee—it's simply a product name created by the company.

The most famous origins for Asian coffee are the islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, Sumatran Mandheling coffee from Indonesia's Sumatra Island is the most renowned.

Both Lake Toba in North Sumatra Province and Lake Tawar in Aceh produce Mandheling coffee, creating what is famously known as the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling." The common characteristic of the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling" is their rich, full-bodied flavor. The difference is that Lake Toba's Mandheling is more mellow, deep, and sometimes carries a grass jelly flavor, while Lake Tawar Mandheling has brighter fruit acidity and occasionally presents cedar or woody notes.

During World War II, when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank incredibly fragrant and rich coffee at a café. He asked the shop owner for the coffee's name, but the owner misunderstood and thought he was asking where he was from, so he replied: Mandailing. After the war, the Japanese soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he drank in Indonesia. He then commissioned an Indonesian coffee merchant to ship 15 tons to Japan, and it became surprisingly popular. The name Mandheling thus spread.
