Sun-Dried Sidamo Shakisso G1 Guji Honey Premium Coffee Beans: Origin, Development, History, and Cultural Overview
The Origin of Shakisso
Shakisso, located in the Guji zone of the Oromia region in southern Ethiopia, borders Sidama and Gedeo. This area contains numerous mining pits that were originally excavated for gold extraction, leaving many cavities throughout the coffee growing region. This makes walking through the coffee plantation areas particularly hazardous.
Shakisso stands as a distinctive coffee-producing region within Guji/Sidamo, situated in a remote area far from most coffee-growing zones even within Sidamo. Another notable local product is gold mining. Factors involving miners, land disputes, and ethnic tensions contributed to regional instability in 2006. Consequently, the area now faces its greatest challenge: the need for manpower to maintain the plantations and harvest coffee crops.
Local small-scale farmers began cultivating organic coffee in 2001, working closely with medium-sized coffee producers who possess expertise in growing forest coffee in highland regions.
