According to legend, in 1545, the explorer Ortiz Retes arrived at the island and discovered that most of the island's inhabitants had curly hair, so he called it the "island of curly-haired people," and this name has been passed down ever since. Located east of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea has a typical maritime climate and is situated near the equator.

Papua New Guinea: A Coffee Paradise

Coffee Production and Industry

Local production volumes are modest, with approximately 85% of total coffee produced through smallholder garden cultivation systems. Small farmers join local cooperatives, sharing processing facilities. Coffee ranks as Papua New Guinea's second-largest agricultural export, highlighting the industry's importance to the national economy. Due to different coffee varieties than Indonesia, higher elevations than Sumatra, and the use of washed processing, PNG coffee's regional characteristics differ markedly from Indonesia's earthy and low-toned flavors, instead offering bright acidity, sweet-sour notes, and floral and fruit aromas—similar to South American profiles.

Natural Environment and Quality

Papua New Guinea boasts a pristine and primitive natural environment with vast, fertile lands. Its unique volcanic soil and abundant rainfall create excellent natural conditions for coffee cultivation. Papua New Guinea's premium coffee beans are as beautiful and precious as the country's national bird, the bird of paradise.

Kimel Estate: A Unique Cooperative Model

Large plantations typically operate their own wet mills, while smaller individual coffee farmers can better control output quality and flavor expression. Located in Papua New Guinea's western highlands, the Kimel Valley near the Kimel River region, Kimel Estate—like many large plantations—has its own dedicated wet mill. In reality, however, this is an estate jointly owned by numerous independent small farmers from the surrounding Opais people, making it, in a sense, a private cooperative. Thanks to excellent growing conditions and stable quality control processes at the mill, the coffee produced exhibits vibrant brightness while preserving the unique flavor characteristics typical of Papua New Guinea coffee.

Varietal Diversity

Another special feature lies in the diverse coffee varieties cultivated at Kimel—so numerous they can't be counted on one hand: Typica, Arusha, Blue Mountain, Mundo Novo, Catimor, Caturra, and even more. In fact, just as one wouldn't put all eggs in one basket, most farmers plant different varieties to avoid the risk of poor adaptation or unexpected production results from any single variety, creating interesting and diverse flavor expressions.

Tasting Notes

This Kimel Estate peaberry coffee offers subtle spiced notes on the palate, with nutty and sugarcane sweetness that is refreshing and pleasant. It presents a creamy, buttery smoothness, with the peaberry's characteristic fuller body. The overall expression is balanced and smooth. The flavor is rich and the aroma delightful, with no herbal or earthy notes. Its texture is as rich and full-bodied as a Van Gogh painting.
