Panama Coffee Origin

Premium Panama coffee grows in the west of the country, near the Costa Rican border and close to the Pacific. The most celebrated coffee comes from the Boquet region of Chiriqui province, with Volcán, Santa Clara, and Candela also well known; other notable areas include the David, Remacimeinto, Bugaba, and Tole districts. Only coffee grown between 1,300 and 1,500 meters qualifies as specialty coffee.

Catuai Variety

"Catuai" is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra — a second-generation cross. It inherits Caturra's compact, low-growing structure. The name comes from an indigenous word meaning "very good," and as a member of the Arabica family, Catuai is relatively high-yielding.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Curious what Panamanian coffee can do? The growing regions — Boquet, Volcán, Santa Clara, and Piedra de Candela in Chiriqui province — sit right in the heart of the coffee belt on fertile volcanic soil beneath old-growth forest, with mountain mists keeping days humid and nights cool.

For a first taste, FrontStreet Coffee recommends the Boquete washed Gesha — an estate-level entry Gesha planted at 1,600 meters, cupping with the variety's signature jasmine florals, green tea, honey, citrus, and orange. For half the Gesha pedigree at a friendlier price, the FrontStreet Panama washed "Flower Butterfly" blends Gesha, Caturra, and Catuai from the Barú volcano area, outstanding in body, citrusy acidity, and jasmine aroma — lovely as pour-over or cold brew. And for the top of the line, the Esmeralda Red Label Gesha comes from a single 1,700-meter+ plot with a refined orange-blossom, honeyed character.
